The tribes: Nothing is known of the people who cleared the land. The first names are known Legures from beyond the Alps, small and brown. They were driven southward by the Celts from Central Europe, large and blond in 400 BC The Romans called them "Gallias" hence the name "Gauls". They were divided into numerous tribes, one of them occupied the country, "the Allobroges. It is from the year 50 BC that began the Roman conquest, which will take 4 to 5 centuries. The Roman Empire was invaded by barbarians and the country occupied by the Burgundians from 434 to 543 which, in turn, were defeated by the Franks. Around 700 began the invasion of the Moors who were killing and pillaging. Earls and barons had to defend their land. This was the beginning of the construction of castles and feudalism. The castle probably dates from this period.
Creation of the town: In the revolution in 1789, this county did not exist. There were two of the common Coise and Saint-Jean-Pied-Gauthier. The communes of Savoy, too many were met July 25, 1794 by decree Albitte. This was merged and Coise and Saint-Jean-Pied-Gauthier.
The name of the town and its inhabitants:
Coise: Various forms of the name in 1036 Cosi; COESIA in 1127; in 1129 or Coysia Coise; in 1581Cuesia; Coya in 1728. Furthermore, the brook Coisin (4140 meters Coise) which defines, approximately, the town on its length called "the Coise" (Celtic word meaning quiet). The valley stretching up Poncharra called Valley Coise. We do not know if this is the creek that gave the village its name or otherwise. The noble families have borne different names: Avalon Coys, Coysia or Coysy of Coisy of Coysia of Coise of Coise. The people: They are called Coisards.
Saint-Jean-Pied-Gauthier: Various forms of the name in 1127 Sancti Joannis; in 1276 Joannis de Podia Gauterie; in 1279 AMEDEUS of Povio Gauterie; in 1295 Podium Galteri; Gautié Pie in 1344; in 1521 Podogaltérium; in 1721 St. Jean-Puy-Gauthier. Saint-Jean is the name of the parish patron Saint John. Pied Gauthier comes from the name of the owning family Gauthier first known Podium "The Mollard and Tower". Podium: Latin name which means hill, translated into French by then, puy, Piedmontese and then deformed in the foot. The people: They are called the Holy Jeannots delivered in January-no.
SIGHTSEEING
The town has no tourist. However, the territory of the town was marked by the occupation and medieval monuments and relics bear witness to its history:
Castle Rubaud which housed two large noble dynasties. The enclosure primitive feudal included at least two strong houses, Ribod and Montfort. Currently, Montfort is now a place called the Castle and Rubaud he still has some old parts (fifteenth century) was rebuilt around 1840 by Charles Menthon of Aviernoz.
The fortified village of Frasses rectangular central to street, commanded by a fortified house with two towers is a good example of medieval occupation.
The tower Loze: the town derives its name from the castle of Puy Gauthier, who watched his Mollard Valley Coisin and gave his name to a family named as from 1221. It is assumed that there was a real strong camp which remains today the tower. It is a square tower with a body building.
