TOWN PRESENTATION
  • The common Clermont-Dessous consists of five villages or hamlets. It is bounded on the north by the creek and the mass to the south by the river Garonne.
  • A Brief History communal ...
  • Among twenty heads places in France are called "Clermont", two thirds are located in the south, the northernmost of those there are also the most important: Clermont-Ferrand. The term "clermont" etymologically means light and clarity. The Clermont agenais, nicknamed "below" by mistranslation of the word original Occitan, do not feel inferior to anyone! Judge for high position of dominance.
  • At the dawn of our history the inhabitants safe on this promontory, watching vigilantly the Gallic riparian forest where the river, then pressing and formidable cast his misbehavior. Over the centuries, successive generations watched with a cautious fear or curiosity passage of the Roman legions, the Visigothic troops or fleets Norman staggering.   • In the 13th century, Agen, Toulouse land movement had suffered from the Albigensian Crusade fratricide. Simon de Montfort ravaged Penne d'Agen. After his death at the siege of Toulouse in 1218, wants his son Amaury, in 1221, encircling the hill of Clermont, but must lift the siege without results.
  • During the interminable Hundred Years War, Agen, border zone between English Aquitaine and Languedoc Toulouse passed alternately from one sovereignty to another chance to battle.
  • Later in the 16th century, despite the proximity of the Huguenot cities of Nerac and Tonneins Clairac Clermont would not suffer too much of religious strife and looked to pass, indifferent, the procession of Marshal Albert de Luynes in 1621 returning to his failure to Montauban to die before Tonneins the Chateau de Longueville.
  • In the Enlightenment, the philosopher Montesquieu spent on land Clermont to get from his castle to Vivens Clairac in his barony of Montesquieu.
  • At the dawn of the Revolution, the parish of Clermont joins Agen writing notebooks of grievances of the third estate. In 1790, the Constituent Assembly created the Department of Lot-et-Garonne and defines the common Clermont-Dessous uniting his own parish as St. Medard and Puymasson.
  • In this shattered and tragic end of the 18th century, the area Clermont-Dessous belonging to the family of which the holder Rastignac Marquis Chapt Rastignac emigrate not like all the other nobles is found both in Paris and the Dordogne and that 'Agen he was not a moment left the soil of France and can preserve their land for sale Clermont as a national asset. SIGHTSEEING
  • Three villages on the slopes (view on the Garonne and the plain):
  • Clermont-Dessous: City of the medieval era, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley of the Garonne to the south and the valley of the mass to the north. Stronghold in the Middle Ages, surrounded by walls, there remains a castle tower is being restored and fortified church dating from the twelfth century site listed monument, is a pure masterpiece of Romanesque style.
  • Saint-Médard: village lies the village hall and the beautiful church of the twelfth and fourteenth century.
  • Puymasson: village located at the east end with a splendid view and very wide on the valley of the Garonne. To see a church of the twelfth and fourteenth century very well restored.
  • Two villages in the valley:
  • Fourtic: Located along the D813 (formerly N113) - administrative center with the town hall, school. Walks on the shady banks of the Garonne. Point of shad fishing.
  • Lapouleille: Located along the D813. Village extended along the Garonne. Nice fishing spot to the refurbished pier.
  • The variety of leisure activities: hiking, biking and equestrian (marked trails).
  • Breeding of Angora goats producing mohair, visit the farm.
  • Interesting places various: ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa, manor houses, fountains, Valley of the mass.
