TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Clamecy is located on a rocky outcrop north of (Burgundy), at the confluence of the Yonne and the Beuvron. It is crossed by the Canal du Nivernais.
  • The origin of Clamecy, which is mentioned in 635, is obscure. Clamecy has been variously designated:
  • Urbs clementii, named Clementius, a Roman general.
  • Clementiacum, named after a temple dedicated to the clemency which may have been high and that there remains no trace.
  • Clemeciacum.
  • Clamiciacum.
  • Built in the 8th century church, Clamecy is, in the early 11th century, the bishop of Auxerre, under the sovereign authority of the Counts of Nevers. They then built a castle there, now gone, surrounded by fortifications. Clamecy obtained his freedom from Hervé, Count of Nevers, in 1213. Clamecy weapons were those of the Landry family, former lords of Auxerre and Nevers.
  • Highlights of the history of Clamecy
  • Clamecy, seat of the diocese of Bethlehem from 1223 to 1801: In 1147, William II, Count of Nevers, based at the hospital Clamecy Panténor. In 1167, his grand-son, William IV, on a crusade to Palestine where he died of the plague a year later. Before he died, he bequeathed by will of the hospital Panténor to the bishopric of Bethlehem in Palestine, founded in 1110, in case it would not last in the Holy Land. Chased in 1223, the bishops come to Bethlehem to establish their Clamecy Episcopal Concordat which will remain until 1801. The area of Bethlehem is located on the right bank of the Yonne. The old Episcopal Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem was built in the late 12th century. Part still exists (restaurant of the Auberge de la Chapelle). The present church of Byzantine style, reinforced concrete, in 1926.
  • Clamecy and the coup of December 2, 1851: On December 2, 1851, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, President of the second republic, dissolved the legislature, it refused to change the constitution of 1848 which allows not run for another term. Through a new constitution, he wants to stay ahead of the state with increased powers. While the uprising was crushed in Paris on December 4, she broke the 5 in the Nièvre, under siege since October 21. A Clamecy, floats, petty traders and artisans rapidly overran the city, supported by reinforcements from neighboring communities. The barricades at the gates of the city are abandoned gradually as the news comes from Paris and on December 8, the insurgency is over. Punishment will be relentless, resulting in hundreds of arrests. The detainees are brought before a military commission or a council of war and heavy sentences: the death penalty for some, the deportation to Cayenne or Algeria for hundreds of others ... A column has been raised to their memory at the top of Crot Pinçon, the scene of the execution of two death row inmates.
  • Clamecy, capital of the log: In the early 16th century, forest depletion in the Paris basin requires the capital to turn to the Morvan to stock up on firewood. The woods of Morvan, floating over the water, where they manage to Clamecy consist in rafts. They are then conveyed to Paris by the Seine and Yonne. Rafts were 75 meters long and 4.5 m wide each representing a volume of about 200 cubic meters, are labor-intensive and experienced. Over the centuries, the quantities of timber transported are increasing and rafting peaked in the late 18th century. Until 3500 trains will consist of annual wood on the banks of the Yonne. The Nivernais canal built to enhance career opportunities, often perilous, rafts, was completed in 1843. But he will not see the long passage of these convoys on the water. The decline begins with the floating barge transport and the advent of the coal that supplies the firewood. The last "great flood" Clamecy reached in 1923.
  • The SPCC (Society of Chemical Clamecy), a city within a city: Founded in 1922, the CCPC, wood carbonization plant, used in this activity up to 600 workers. Under the leadership of its CEO, Maurice Brulfer, will be built a veritable "city within a city". For employees and their families will be built the cities of Bagatelle and St. Roch, a stage ... and even a chapel where Mass is celebrated every Sunday. Wood carbonization was stopped in 1981. The factory was taken over by Rhodia. There is little left of the town of Trifle and the chapel, decorated by Pouyaud, is abandoned. The management of Rhodia donated the Stations of the Cross in the town. The building that housed the offices and laboratory of the CCPC is concrete, covered in the Art Deco style. It contains frescoes depicting the life of Pouyaud working at the time. It is part of the industrial heritage of the 20th century in Burgundy inventoried by the Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs.
