The common Cinq-Mars-la-Pile is located in the Loire Valley, west of the central region and the department of Indre-et-Loire, 21 miles west of Tours, on the Roman road from Tours to Angers .
It had 3175 inhabitants in 2007 (source Insee) and covers an area of 20.11 square kilometers north of the Loire, built against a hillside.
Small village in viticulture tradition in a very touristy Valley World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the town of Cinq-Mars-la-Pile presents a tourist for sure.
It derives its name from a curious monument shaped tower, or battery, dating from Roman times, which dominates the hillside just east of the town.
Originally Terra Sancti Medard, "Saint-Médard, Saint-Mars Cinq-Mars, then, spelling the end of the sixteenth.
The town was under the yoke of the lordship of Ruze Effiat until 1768, then the Duke of Choiseul and the Duke of Luynes.
The battery Gallo-Roman: At the entrance to the town, there is a Gallo-Roman monument called?? The battery??. This building dates from the 2nd century and its role remains a mystery, many hypotheses being advanced and contested. According to the most likely hypothesis, it would be the highest stack funeral of Gaul (the other buildings located in Florida) overlooking the Loire Valley of fifty meters. In 1840, she was one of the first monuments to be classified by Prosper Merimee. Its conservation status is a major component of the Gallo-Roman department. Visible from the N152.
The castle of Cinq-Mars (twelfth and thirteenth centuries). Best known for the novel by Alfred de Vigny "Cinq-Mars," which chronicles the tragic fate of the Marquis de Cinq-Mars, a favorite of Louis 13th was beheaded at the age of 22 years for treason. Visit towers, moats and parklands.
The church of Saint-Medard: Romanesque church dating from the 10th and 11th century and was restored in the nineteenth. Transept and heart barrel are registered historical monuments and its Romanesque bell tower square classified. The church is surmounted by an octagonal spire from the 15th century.
