Located on the banks of the Acheneau, bordering the marsh, the village of Cheix-en-Retz was evangelized in the 6th century by St. Martin Vertou that would have allowed his name to the imposing stone trembling near the River Acheneau.

The town has a charming church surrounded by houses of character, including the former vicarage. In 1838, a treasure trove of Roman coins was discovered at "Malnoë" site of an ancient Gallo-Roman fortifications which would come to Julius Caesar. Leaving the village you will reach the picturesque village situated on the Pilon Acheneau. This river has the distinction of running in 2 directions depending on the season: it regulates the water level of one of the largest lakes in France in winter: Lake Grand-Lieu.
