Covering an area of 4 square kilometers, located on the first Jurassic plateau at an altitude of 555 m, the village has about 100 residents called the chausseniers.

It belongs to the Community of Municipalities of the County Grimont (named after the ancient castle Grimont, once residence of Counts of Burgundy).

The Gallo-Roman period is attested by remains found in a road leaving the village to Vaux.

Chaussenans was burned in 1638 during the battle known as Chamole by the French Duke of Longeville; a single building was untouched, the house-high Tower, identifiable by the small Virgin that we can still see the wall. An outbreak of plague decimated the last inhabitants in 1851.

Jewel of municipal assets, the Sainte-Anne-roofed lava, fourteenth, restored in 1993.
