TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Overview: Located at 417 m altitude, with an area of 895 ha, Châteauneuf is a common dynamic of the middle country. True to the tradition of agriculture and horticulture which has become famous, the town has also developed other economic activities both in crafts (ceramics, pottery, sculptures, ..) and commercial. With a rich past dating back to prehistoric times, Châteauneuf has seen, over the centuries, its boundaries change dramatically. The current boundaries date from 1830.
  • History of Chateauneuf
  • The first remains found on the territory of the town date from about 2500 BC Although located at the crossroads of two routes, the Brague Mardaric and must await the arrival of the Romans, about -150 to that the territory known more rapidly. Under Roman influence, a period of calm sets in and develops Opio. Perhaps the presence of an intermittent source of water, regularly attracting people who will be responsible for building a church and a baptistery on the site Brusc around the 5th century .
  • As for the rest of France, the region has a long troubled period by several invasions to the 11th century. With the feudal system that was put in place, the site Brusc recovered importance. An impressive basilica is built from the old building. The intermittent source, now captured in a crypt, attracts many pilgrims and faithful. The church Brusc becomes a high place of worship.
  • By the mid 12th century due to growing insecurity, the Lords Opio erected a new castle on the highest point of their territory to the site of a former Castelleras (or oppidum). This castle was soon named the New Castle Opio. Many people "moved" Opio to place themselves under the protection of the new building. Gradually, relations between the two communities will deteriorate.
  • In the early 13th century, stands Châteauneuf Opio village and became "independent". At the end of this division that the church Brusc happening in the area of Chateauneuf.
  • The Middle Ages were a period troubled by dynastic struggles of the Counts of Provence. At that time there was no mill in Châteauneuf, but there is an oven. Cultures are barely sufficient for the population, the village did not spring, it must fetch water from the glue of Brague source located in the lower village "in a line of crossbow. The late Middle Ages is an era of prosperity for Chateauneuf, population increases: 350 family heads in 1540. There are few things to the Renaissance period.
  • In the 17th century, there were 2400 people accommodated in 301 houses. Under population pressure, there was not enough land for all. The wine, oil, wheat and figs are the main crops and are an active trade with Genoa port of Antibes and Cannes. Our Lady of Brusc who had suffered terribly during the Wars of Religion is rebuilt, made to worship, people come to pray for rain.
  • In the 19th century in 1822 by royal decision, the City of Clermont is attached to Chateauneuf. In 1830, the hamlets of Bergiers are distracted from Chateauneuf and attached to the Municipality of Rouret.
  • For a more complete history of Chateauneuf, you can consult the book of Lucien Aune: Country in Chateauneuf de Grasse, edited "The star of the South" which were derived extracts presented here.
  • In 1999 the municipality had 3033 inhabitants.

SIGHTSEEING
  • Chapel of Our Lady of Brusc:
  • Located atop a small plateau in the plains dominated Châteauneuf, this chapel is the remnant of a vast basilica, built in the 11th century on the site of a former church of the 5th century. The chapel has been restored and classified a historical monument in 1986.
  • A guided tour is possible, inquire at the tourist office (open in July and August).
  • The presence of an intermittent source provides probably the reason for the election of this site. The sources have always had great importance in the popular cults, especially those related to the symbolic cycle of the seasons, those who are different from ordinary sources by some unusual characteristic. Occupied since the Bronze Age, the site was quickly served as a gathering place in Roman times, then saw the building of a church and a basilica. This would have a similar size to that of the Abbey of Lerins.
  • Trinity Chapel:
  • It was the church of the town of Clermont before it is attached to Chateauneuf.
  • It is beautifully built on a promontory, a former Roman camp, in a pastoral site.
  • Saint-Martin:
  • Present at the heart of the village, this 10th century church was restored in 1627. It dominates Châteauneuf its bell tower and houses a 18th century altarpiece.
  • A guided tour is possible, inquire in the Office of Tourism, opened in July and August.
  • Rue de l'Eglise, rises above some stairs on the west facade which opens the main entrance adorned with a porch (early 17th century). By the Rectory Street along the stately garden, we discovered the church dominated by its square bell tower rebuilt in 1826. In the manner of a chapel, the church stands near the Noble House with which they could communicate directly. This is reminiscent of the first church built with the creation of Châteauneuf in the 12th century and then a small Romanesque chapel located inside the castle that occupied the entire top of the current village.
  • Laundry Great Fountain:
  • What are the sources that feed the Brague this recently renovated laundry. One can also observe two troughs and a trough for washing wool and wheat. This site, shaded by ancient plane trees, is worth visiting. The river winds on the plain Opio joins Valbonne, Biot and then flows into the Mediterranean. Its importance in the implementation of these villages is of course significant.
  • Caution: difficult access by car.
