TOWN PRESENTATION

Overlooking the meandering canal from Nantes to Brest, in a beautiful setting that can not leave insensible the lovers of landscapes holiday nature.

Châteauneuf-du-Faou is a "green resort" vacation, nestled in the valley of Alder, flying in the background, the Arrée Mountains to the north and the Black Mountains to the south.

The location of Châteauneuf-du-Faou, in the heart of Brittany, in fact an ideal center for excursions to the Regional Natural Park of Armorica and the most beautiful beaches of South Cornwall (Concarneau, Concarneau) or berries or Crozon Douarnenez. The nearest beach is located in Saint-Nic, Pentrez. For the accommodation of tourists, many opportunities available to them.

Getting to Châteauneuf-du-Faou?

By road:

  • From Rennes (no toll). Expressway to Saint-Brieuc. At Montauban take the RN 164 and follow signs for Quimper.
  • From Nantes (no toll). Expressway management Valves / Quimper. Exit the expressway at Rosporden then follow the direction of Châteauneuf-du-Faou or leave the expressway and follow the axis Châteaulin Châteauneuf-du-Faou / Carhaix.

By train: 4 hours T.G.V.

  • Paris - Montparnasse - Quimper (30 minutes from Châteauneuf).

By plane:

  • Paris - Quimper - Pluguffan (40 min Châteauneuf).
  • Paris - Brest - Guipavas (40 min Châteauneuf).

Breton cultural identity alive. The Breton language is still spoken in Western Brittany. It is used commonly in everyday life in and around Châteauneuf-du-Faou. It is taught in some schools in the city. Breton culture is celebrated in many festivals in the region and, as Châteauneuf-du-Faou, on the occasion of Festou-Noz (Christmas night). Music and dance traditions have known for decades a major revival in Britain, especially in Brittany.


SIGHTSEEING
  • Paul Sérusier:
  • The pastoral setting, with its green valleys, hills mysterious, the ubiquity of white water and the simple life of the inhabitants will not leave indifferent the painter Paul Serusier.
  • This is where the painter, founder of the Nabi and disciple of Paul Gauguin, attracted by the scene, established in 1893. The master found the inspiration and moved to Châteauneuf-du-Faou at number 27 the street that now bears his name, to stay until his death in 1927.
  • The church has preserved the memory of his stay through the murals painted in the baptistery.
  • Today, a journey through the city traces its châteauneuvienne stage and to discover the landscapes he immortalized (brochure available free at the tourist office and town hall).
  • The church of Saint-Julien:
  • The building was rebuilt in 1878. It retains the old bell tower in 1737. The walls of the baptistery was decorated by the artist Paul Serusier, a friend of Gauguin and founder of the nabi (prophet in Hebrew). These murals, painted between 1914 and 1918, are the important scenes from the life of Christ.
  • The murals Sérusier are available every day either by the main gate or the door to the street.
  • The canal from Nantes to Brest:
  • The Alder, at the foot of downtown, offers the beauty of its eyes meanders. Roy of the old bridge, built in the 17th century to Penn Ar Pont, has retained its charm. The river was channeled in the 19th century to become the canal from Nantes to Brest.
  • You can discover its locks. The canal from Nantes to Brest gives the opportunity to stroll along its banks, on the towpaths. Fishermen have made the channel a favorite.   • The Chapel of Our Lady of Doors:

The old building remains a Gothic porch of the 15th century located right next to the chapel which was built using stones from the castle. She became a pilgrimage site that attracts the homage of thousands of pilgrims from across the UK. Can be seen on a stained glass scene of a priest murdered by soldiers of the Lord Liscöet who entered in 1593 in the city, accompanied by 400 men who watch a lot of insolence and cruelty.
  • Forgiveness Religious of the Notre Dame of Doors:
  • One of the largest in Britain, the forgiveness of Our Lady of the Gates is celebrated the last Sunday of August and lasts three days.
  • Friday: Sorry for seniors and the sick.
  • Saturday: Marches preparatory Marian vigil, candlelight procession, the statue of the Virgin is carried by the men of fifty years in traditional costume.
  • Sunday: Solemn Mass, praise and vesperal procession of the Virgin crowned, worn by women of fifty years in traditional costume.
  • The carnival continues throughout the week, the Market Square.
  • The fountain underground Saint John the Baptist:
  • This fountain is located in the Corentin Baron Street, near the church.
  • Saint John the Baptist has the power to protect waters from pollution, a scourge dreaded the Middle Ages. He was also reputed to cure eye diseases. This saint was venerated at a time, to Châteauneuf-du-Faou as it continues to this day, a granite statue from the 15th century polychrome.
  • To find out, it is down some steps leading to a magnificent fountain underground. After walking under the arch masonry (lintel inscribed 1747-1847), one can admire a beautiful statue of the saint on the left arm a lamb. At her feet, held the muzzle of a beast.
  • The Fountain Santigie Gouenou:

  • Located about 3 km from Châteauneuf-du-Faou to join, just follow the direction of Carhaix then Spézet, and immediately the first road on the right (the panel reports).

  • This is a view of the Black Mountains (200 million years) that their name from the color of black shale but also the color of the forest cover which abounded yews and holly. EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS
  • Spring Chateauneuf: witness the popularity of the Breton culture Châteauneuf-du-Faou spring festival is a traditional dance and music which takes place on Easter Sunday. It is animated by the best singers and ringers Area. It attracts an annual crowd of experienced dancers and enthusiasts, who come from throughout the UK.
