TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Château-Landon: Carrefour history ...
  • A 100 km of Paris, Montargis 18 North, 46 in Eastern Pithiviers, 45 west of Sens, 63 km south of Melun, Château-Landon has long been a major road junction of where each routes that it had met its purpose: military, religious, commercial.
  • The oldest known Roman road, "Chemin de César" linking Orleans (Genabum) Sens (Agedicum), saw him pass the legions, the barbarian Huns from the east, breaking the Norman West . The big leap of faith from the Middle Ages ran on the roads the pilgrims going to venerate the holy relics exhibited in the neighboring abbeys (Saint-Mathurin Larchant, St. Severin and St. Thugal to Château-Landon, St. Clair Souppes, Saint Aldric in Ferrieres ). The highway from Paris to Nevers serves both the pilgrims going to Saint Jacques de Compostela as international merchants and others, less important link local shopping centers and have name: Green Path Road of oxen, the Debeuse, cows. All have the signal, located at remote locations: the bell tower of Notre-Dame de Château-Landon.
  • Château-Landon: His past history ...
  • If nearly two prehistoric sites were identified around Château-Landon do not expect to discover the Gallo-Roman ruins, yet it is well Château-Landon, a city built on a rocky outcrop, in fact an oppidum the legions of Caesar found in their way in 52 BC, when, from the Sens, they made a forced march to Orleans to suppress a rebellion Gallic. The siege lasted three days, the city in ruins, had ransomed deliver to meet the winner of six hundred men. The town mentioned in "Comments on the Gallic Wars" Caesar's name Vellaunodunum.
  • Castelnandunum, Castrolandonis, Castrum Nandone, Chetiau Landon, Landon or even Kerak, regardless of whose name it is called subsequently disappears from the chronic to the early fifth century, we no longer talk of the town but it is not abandoned so far, since in the fifth century, a Nantus Lentulus, the Roman proconsul built a castle in the town of Castel Landon.
  • In 507 the city remembered in history and an event - the consequences of which were important - Château-Landon touched directly. It all started a long journey as carried by a learned monk's reputation as a healer to visit the monastery of Agaune-en-Valais at the bedside of the Frankish king, Clovis, suffering in the city of Lutetia, a rebel fever , refractory to treatment ground. A royal call, Severin came implored God spread his cloak over the dying man and healed him. Refusing all honor and all this, he went back to Helvetia. Thus, at the beginning of 507, out of force, he was rescued by two monks, hermits living in a hermitage built in the place called "the mountain of Château-Landon" shortly afterwards, "surrounded by light," Severin died - February 11 -. 507 Hearing of his death, Clovis grateful, promised to build a chapel where the relics are venerated the saint, held promise that his son Childebert in 545. At that church, was associated with an abbey for serving the religious shrines. A religious impulse would ensure prosperity for several centuries the city became capital of Gâtinais until 1404.
  • Prosperity helping, supported by the temporal jurisdiction of the monks, Château-Landon quickly became an important city where kings, earls and abbots shared the privilege. This is where born in 1043 Fulk Rechin The fourth, grand son of Fulk said third Nerra, Count of Anjou, father of King of Jerusalem Fulk 5th, grandfather of Geoffrey the Fair, the first Plantagenet, dynasty that ruled over England for centuries.
  • The city, which came in 1068 in Royal by Philip first became an intermittent residence of the kings of France under the Capetian.
  • The late Middle Ages, its wars and plague ruining the city, causing its depopulation. However, in the 19th century, mining and stone cutting it develops for the construction of prestigious monuments of the city and province. We use the stone for paving Château-Landon the Pantheon, the building of the Arc de Triomphe, in the foundations of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the building of churches in the area. The operation ceased in the last century, it continues to Souppes-sur-Loing, neighboring town.
  • Château-Landon: Its stones and monuments ...
  • The past has naturally left its mark on the city. Just move through the streets of "castrum" medieval to see what could be the flourishing city: thick walls surrounding the fortress, strengthened by massive towers which one of them, the tower Madeleine, we succeeded in relatively good condition; posterns strides in the rampart, alleys and stairs descending the steep slope, cellars, dark corridors, halls and galleries seat now unfortunately inaccessible to most. It's quite a scene as the imagination just waiting to be revived. Outside what was once the "walled city" Strong City, another city, more airy, devoted to shops, fairs, and markets has been built. New Town shows the animation qu'apportèrent merchants and pilgrims.
  • All the East, an important building, the Abbey of Saint-Severin county retirement home today. In the mid additions and restorations performed in the late 15th century, we recognize the monument of Philip Augustus, with its arched windows, fireplaces features, powerful buttresses northlight reminiscent of the "Wonder" Mont-Saint Michael, its high round tower. Housing until the Revolution of 1789 a community of secular religion, of the Augustinian Order, the abbey was sold as national property and partially destroyed or converted into living quarters. One hundred years later - now owned by the family Open - one of its members, AF Crafted, made donation to the department of Seine-et-Marne to use as a hospice for the aged poor, which was done (31 May 1892). It's in its fleet that is the early church (discovered in 1927) where the saint's relics were venerated. Preventive archaeological excavations conducted in 1997, resulting from expansion and the humanization of the nursing home allowed to deepen the knowledge of the abbey.
  • In the strong city, a square tower, a remnant of an ancient basilica dedicated to St. Thugal, attracts attention. Here were deposited the relics of the Breton saint, by the monks of the 10th century Tréguier fleeing the Norman invaders. This tower is part of the defensive system of the city assigned to the 11th century, it prepares its six floors of the south apse of a building no longer exists where we can guess, however, a nave with side aisles and an apse flanked by two apses. The lower floors are made of a double stone facing of small device placed in the ear by the method used in the pre-Roman Carolingian. His penultimate priest was in 1781 Jean-Claude Le Blanc De Beaulieu, uncle of George Sand.
  • Third monument of interest here, the Church of Our Lady of Château-Landon. Amazing construction gives us, written in stone, a masterful lesson in medieval architecture, which blend and mix, styles Carolingian, Romanesque and Gothic. Building hybrique together: the 10th and 11th century in the pillars on the north side of the nave and the central portal, the 12th in the restoration of the transept and choir, as well as in the bell tower whose floors were not completed as the thirteenth -fourteenth centuries, along with the resumption of the South arcade of the nave and the expansion of the south aisle. Its bell tower, unique in the French countryside, stands an impressive stone figure of a rare light, as light and wind to pass through and through.
  • Further away, finally, to the west, just outside of town stands the gatehouse of St. Andrew, the remains of a priory.
  • Château-Landon: The river and Fusin Tabarderie ...
  • The importance of the historical heritage that we discover Château-Landon (the few lines above do not disclose any) should not forget the context, the natural heritage of this city attractive. What a wonderful sight when the bottom of the valley on the banks of Fusin, we find these gardens that cascade over a steep slope.
  • Each season renews in the background. It's winter, the trees withered and black, white and edged by the austerity of the foothills and turns. It's spring, the wallflowers climbing the walls, roses, valerian flowing of dry stone walls. In the summer, where "we dine in the terraced gardens to the walls" so poetized by Paul Fort. Last fall, with Virginia creeper ablaze at sunset.
  • This magic we need to Fusin, living person, whose encounter with the city bore this enchanting setting. Both arms, the natural meandering along the Itoire hill facing the city, which bathes the artificial gardens and through the park of Tabarderie is the work of the monks of Saint-Severin and Saint-André ; mills that once staked is millers, weavers, tanners who made Château-Landon one of the most prosperous cities of the Ile de France. And if you stroll along the river, you have the curiosity to count the wash, you do no fewer than seventeen at the foot of the city; discovery of nostalgia given the state of abandonment of some, but full of gratitude for the efforts of the municipality and those who have undertaken to identify and preserve the witnesses of the history of Château-Landon.
