TOWN PRESENTATION

Long the least populated town in the Eure Champignolles is a small village which appears as the archetype of Normandy with its picturesque landscapes, its broad valley, its grasslands, its old buildings and farms. Located along the Risle, miraculously preserved the village has a rare combination of natural and landscaped areas that are recognized the best gateway to the valley Risle.

SIGHTSEEING
  • The parish church of Saint-Gilles Saint-Loup (tenth or 11th century), medieval Norman architecture.
  • The construction, probably initiated in the first half of the 12th century, began to move first to the east, then north and south, by the bedside of rubble flint and ass topped with a square tower and artistically covered Essent boom polygon whose face south, due to the disposal of its gills, could be seen as an allegorical representation of King Arthur - which is that of a king who is primus inter pares ( "first among equals ") but also sovereign - (Arthurian myth has been used extensively to William the Conqueror and Henry Plantagenet 2nd). The quality of design and execution of its medieval structure, using techniques of shipbuilding overturned hull, its frame of oak an exceptional state of preservation of the bell tower with its spire that elegantly reflects the momentum towards heaven. On its pedestal, the console supports all the decorative elements: wind vane, a ball representing the celestial sphere and rooster, symbol of the denial of St. Peter.
  • Rendering of its employees likely green wood, the nature of some assemblies, its vault antler monochrome, its fluted pillars on each of their faces to the base of the arches which punctuate the broken barrel of the vault and lancet ébrasée shows the ability of manufacturers to the Norman school that we found in quite a number of churches in England.
  • The second season (early 13th century (?)) Which corresponds to the construction of the apse, transept, choir and cross again the same party as that of the nave with distinctions that occur in particular outside (without buttresses primitive projections, a new art of building). The other one or two campaigns (beginning and mid 16th century) - that we should perhaps Georges d'Amboise or William of Estouteville prestigious patrons who have allowed the Renaissance blossomed in Normandy -- correspond (s) to build the porch framing sand molded to the 16th century that gives access to the church through a beautiful gate fold towel (rebuilt in the 18th century), the sacristy with its superb and lancet to that of a square chapel flint cleverly paired with a beautiful gable, checkered black and white, flint gray chalk and a real looker, with angles and soft stone, sandstone buttresses, added in the early 16th century at the eastern end of the nave to the south. The gable window, "flamboyant lanceolate, great style and probably out of a learned architect far tasks." See John of the Varende, The Walks, Champignolles, The French Nation, May 2, 1957, is in third paragraph and mullion and tracery, and has a Gothic moldings. The gable of the gable, crowned by a jewel and a circular cross Ante-fixae decorated with festoons Gothic offers a spectrum of flint and stone. The ramps are made of stone, flanked by two parapet.
  • The architectural unity that emerges from his various campaigns of construction is remarkable.
  • The church is dedicated to Saint Gilles, represented as a hermit with the doe for attribute and Saint Loup (Saint Leu) represented by Archbishop mitered into the butt or the cross with two ties.
