TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Neolithic Period and Gallic:
  • The site which was to rise Parish Cavan has long borne the many traces of an ancient past. "The inventory of megalithic monuments" published in 1880 reported a menhir standing a few meters from the Memory Chapel St. in the village of Kerikoul, a second standing stone in the village of Plas-Kerwern, measuring 7 m high (destroyed in 1846) and three mounds located Kerwern-Plas, a short distance from each other. The first, that of Contel-Boudenou was excavated in 1880, especially by Abbot Prigent, vicar Bégard. He revealed traces of ash and a few shards of flint, however slight suggestion that allowed to conclude that this vast mound of earth circular (diameter 50 m, height 15 m) was a burial by incineration, iron age, high honor of a chief by a large tribe, but poor.
  • The second mound at a place called Castel Coagno was explored by Mr. Thubi, public prosecutor in Guingamp, the same year as the previous one. The excavation of this monument (smaller than Contel-Boudenou) brought to light a curious dry stone wall in the shape of a quadrilateral, and some fragments of pottery.
  • A third mound, the Prat-Castel, has never been excavated. Oblong, 13 to 14 m high, the mound was possibly a motte as the name of the locality suggests.
  • That same survey also reported 1880 on the common Cavan, but without placing, two dolmens (one destroyed) and three other mounds. The dolmen survivor has disappeared. As the mounds, it was probably one of them, the "Tossen Modeno" Kerviged located near the old chapel of St. Lawrence, Father Prigent fumbled in 1880 to identify some pieces of iron and pottery, and for others, those who still stood in 1884 near the chapel of St. Trémeur.
  • Two Gallic speakers (?) Were reported on the town in 1890: one Traou ar C'hoad, and the other Kerampuilh.
  • It appears that the common Cavan was home to a major archaeological site and a rare intensity, which reflects the vitality of the old place. Alas, thoughtlessly destroyed, these remnants of civilizations still poorly known, have mostly disappeared entirely from the surface.
  • An aerial view is still clear mounds of Plas-Kerwern. Many indices can, moreover, suggest that the basement has not yet released Cavan all archaeological remains. In reporting any anomalies to publicize any discovery of various objects or remains (foundations and walls for example) can sometimes give a clue to interesting discoveries.
  • Gallo-Roman:
  • Near the town of Cavan passed the old road from Carhaix to Treguier whose course, still recognizable near Bardérou is that even borrows the road from La Roche-Derrien in Louargat. It is still sometimes known in the region under the name of "Pave-ar-Wrac'h", or that of "Hent-Braz-Coz" (the old highway).
  • Some traces (in particular several bronze axes found in 1851) found near Bardero, allow them to suspect the presence of a Roman camp (?). In 1859 were discovered in the village of Kergozh, a piece of Magnentius and several bronze spears.
  • The Middle Ages:
  • This period witnessed the birth of perhaps as training Cavan parish. The rector of Cavan Dom Alain Le Gros, was quoted in the canonization of Charles de Blois in 1364. The Pouillé of Tours Parish already recorded Cavan around 1330. A charter of 1283 mentions the presence in the diocese of Treguier, a parish whose name, Kagan seems to be that of Cavan.
  • The foundation charter of the abbey of Saint-Georges de Rennes allows us to go back at least to 1031 the antiquity of the parish of Cavan. We learn that Cavan (vicum that vocatur Cavana in Cavan a plebe "at a place called Cavan in the parish of Cavan) belonged to some Viscountess Royanteline who had founded a small community of girls (in the eleventh century) . This community was dissolved shortly after its creation, however, had had time to build a chapel dedicated to Mary, Mother of God. It is likely that this community engendered by a subsequent agglomeration tréviale, Caouënnec, dependent Cavan until the revolution. These are the oldest traces Cavan has left in the written history.
  • The discovery of the precise origin of the name only Cavan could probably afford to go still time. But here reign only conjecture. Several assumptions are involved. The most common is that Cavan pronounced Breton "loggerhead", common name derives from Breton "Kaouane" which means owl, screech owl, and when we evoke the marshes with thick foliage, birds of night shelters, where Cavan be built. But this version is not satisfactory for many reasons too long to develop here. A second hypothesis traces the name Cavan and Saint-Haran, or Garan, an Irish monk, companion of St. Efflam, landed in Brittany to the sixth century. It relies essentially on two facts: a) Saint-Garan is the patron of the parish of Cavan, even before St. Cheron, by which it sought in the eighteenth century to replace the old Celtic saint. b) St. Garan had a chapel in Plouguerneau. In proceedings relating thereto, we see succeed, sometimes even coexist forms Garan, Caua, Cava, Cavan. Cavan would have been built around the shrine of St. HOMni or place of worship erected in his honor. Forget about other versions that have little likelihood.
  • The Viscountess Royanteline on which depended the eleventh century Parish Cavan, died without heirs. All his estates were given to the Duke of Brittany who had about 1032, at least if one believes G. Burgundy. Cavan fell thereafter in the house, Duchess of Brittany, then in that of Avaugour. A junior branch of this latter house got in the land of privilege Cavan she took the name. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the proprietor of the manor of Cavan and Caouënnec some Aymeri was still living in 1280. From his marriage with the lady Montmartin he had two son. The eldest, John, principal heir, joined the party Penthievre counts of armed revolt against the Duke of Brittany, Jean 1. Victorious, the latter confiscated in retaliation, the lordship of Cavan for the award, in recognition of his loyal services, Jean, Lord of Kersaliou. The Lordship of Cavan was held at ducal domain.
  • Lords of Cavan wore "gold three owls sand.
  • If we are to believe the tradition, the place called "English cemetery" was the scene of bloody battles during the Hundred Years War. The fact, if not proved, is certainly plausible. The Trégor was, indeed, shaken by war that is waged in the 14th century, the duchy, the house of Montfort allied with the English and that of Blois allied with the French, and opportunities do not fail to slay the English when he occupied the towns of La Roche-Derrien, Tréguier (1335) and Lannion (1346), before being driven out by the uprising of the whole country Trégor in 1347.
  • In civil and military, and Cavan Caouënnec depended castellany Guingamp. The parish and the truce was broken into several jurisdictions, the most important were those of the abbey Bégard, Coatnizan (in Pluzunet), and Wood-Riou (in Cavan).
  • The League:
  • Disorders of the league, which clash saw the royal troops and those of the Duke of Mercoeur, ravaged the country Cavan. The proximity of three strongholds of high military value, the castle Coatnizan, and that of that of Coatfrec Tonquedec, is for something.
  • In the late 16th century, the country was traversed by bands of the Fontenelle or lord of Kergomar. Pillage and ransom were the lot of the country for many years. Rene Fleuriot Langoat gentleman, accompanied by some Botilleau, and took prisoner several rançonnèrent Cavan peasants, until President himself, who however managed to escape, the price of its income from parish where the soldiers enjoyed impunity for them to three years.
  • The Revolution:
  • The Revolution brought in the parish its attendant violence and tragedy. On September 10, 1792, dozens of people were Cavan involved in the scuffle which saw the National Guard Lannion take three to four thousand rebels surrounding parishes.
  • The reason for this uprising seems to have had no reason other than overheating minds. No charges could be brought against three defendants Cavanna.
  • Abbot André Le Gall, vicar at the time Cavan revolutionary events, refused to swear allegiance to the civil constitution of the clergy and forced to emigrate. Arrested Treguier, a lady Taupin, February 11, 1794, he was guillotined in the company of a colleague agreed with him on the place of Marc'hallac'h in Lannion.
  • On November 16, 1799, a band of Chouans (?) Attacked the priest in his rectory constitutional Jannica, stripped of his money and many precious objects. The population was considered cavannaise collectively responsible for the attack because he would not help his pastor, and pay and pay it in full.
  • The first city council was elected in early 1790.
  • The modern age:
  • Elected Mayor Cavan in 1801, Pierre Le Floch had to pass through without stopping at his commune, with a beautiful serenity, Consulate, Empire, Restoration, the Hundred Days, the return of the king, the Revolution of 1830, July Monarchy. Death alone prevented him from swearing in the second republic.
  • His successors were: William Trémel; Guillaume Razavet (elected February 8, 1847); F. Louis Dromaguet (elected 28 November 1867), Yves-Marie Unvoas (elected in October 1894), Louis Le Huérou (elected February 12, 1907), Joseph Clec'h (elected December 13, 1919), Joseph Le Rolland (elected April 12, 1932), Joseph Hellequin (elected on October 1, 1933); Eugene LEGARET (elected December 10, 1938) François-Marie Perrot (elected March 20, 1959), Pierre-Yvon Trémel (elected March 27, 1971), Pierre Yves Nicol (elected September 15, 2006).
  • The famous Cavanna: Among the celebrities who have acquired a certain fame, born Cavan or in connection with this county include names:
  • Charles-Marie April, born in Cavan 1 January 1897. Dominican monk, priest, preacher on the radio and television. Appointed Provincial of the Dominicans of Paris (1947), he resigned that office in 1959 following the conviction of the experience of the worker-priests. He became prior of Jerusalem. He died in Paris September 11, 1978.
  • His brother Henry in April, also born in Cavan, December 4, 1888 was Prefect of Cotes-du-Nord. He died in this position in Saint-Brieuc, January 17, 1949.
  • Pierre-Yvon Trémel, born Cavan August 9, 1946. He was mayor of Cavan to 24 years, from 1971 to 2006, founding chairman of the Commons Community Center Trégor, general counsel of the Canton of La Roche-Derrien, vice president of the General Council of Côtes d'Armor, Cotes MP Armor of 1988 to 1993, Senator Côtes d'Armor 1998-2006.
