TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Appearance of the landscape: In the heart of Chalosse (Landes), the common Caupenne extends from north to south along the Louts (tributary of the Adour). The valley includes the village (altitude 53 m) with its beautiful church and castle. Starting to the west you will quickly height, the landscape here is hilly and offers some interesting views.
  • Life: Rural community, it grows mainly corn, some wheat, grapes, too, but the bulk of agricultural activity is focused on producing gavage duck foie gras, duck breast and confit, also some of sheep. There are fifteen artisans and merchants, and a school belonging to a school reunion.
  • Monuments: Caupenne is a village located at equal distances (9 km) Montfort-en-Chalosse Pomarez in Canton Mugron where superb medieval monuments are scattered throughout the town.
  • The village church, late 11th century, reveals his bedside, the last vestige of the Roman era: in its interior, remarkable woodwork including the sacristy, a setting rich in decorative paints or figured, a monumental chandelier wood and marble master-hotel assigned to white brothers Mazzetti. All these elements from the 18th century. Listed on the inventory of historical monuments in its history is closely linked to the castle, his neighbor.
  • In the center of the village, the castle of the 17th century: the high park gate opens onto a paved driveway. The main entrance is surmounted by a pediment. Two houses lining the main building. The property covers six acres. Built around 1615, the castle is operated by the families of these-Caupenne. This family played an important role in the history of France.
  • In the south-west of the village on the slopes, the Romanesque chapel of St. Lawrence in the early 11th century occupies one end of a rocky outcrop dominates the hilly landscape with a vast backdrop of the majestic Pyrenees. In architecture, but well balanced, it contains an interesting altarpiece classified. Originally medieval church was modified and enlarged over the centuries it has artistic merit and is witness to a rich past of the Christian religion of rural countryside.

SIGHTSEEING
  • Saint-Martin:
  • Listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments September 23, 1970.
  • Visit (ask for the key to Mr. Lacaule house near the church) or tour (by appointment at +33 5 58 98 63 97).
  • This church is named St. Martin in the mid 12th century in the Red Book of the Cathedral of Dax as the Sanctus Martinus de Gueit. A little later, an act of Gascon Roles of English administration indicates that it is in this parish that is situated a castle of the king, which states that another act named after Caupène. Subsequently, the castle built on this castrum, some 500 m south of the church, will be owned by a family who will be known, and many documents which attest to the influence in the region during the later centuries . The same name was later given to the church.
  • From the church mentioned in the Red Book no longer exists today as a bedside book party as severe than harmonious. Outside the bedside, that can be attributed to the second quarter of the 12th century, the scenery, punctuated by buttresses, bands and cornice above, relates first of all windows, just narrow slits s 'opens in an arcade of columns confined; above the capitals of these columns, the abacus extend the pattern of a band that encircles the entire periphery. At the top of the wall, corbels supporting a cornice. All these elements are, unfortunately, as the unit walls, made of a friable stone found in many buildings in the area. Some are very degraded, but some corbels best preserved that one can still see the roof of the vestry can appreciate the delicacy and quality of this sculpture.
  • Inside, the application of modern design has eliminated many original elements of the party. Only the remaining dead-furnace and the cradle of the choir, and the two capitals with foliage, now hidden behind the altar, which frame the window axis. The themes in all these works is interesting: the capitals are decorated smooth leaves, as in Saint-Sever, from balls to tip, or the old theme of birds pecking Paleochristian a bunch - here replaced by a simple fruit elongated - to symbolize the Eucharist palmette tendrils run on the abacus and friezes, and the corbels are decorated simply billets, rolls, sheets with balls, but also crouching lions, eagles, and even exhibitionistic , themes common in the first half of the 12th century on both sides of the Pyrenees. Soon enough, no doubt in the 14th century, the nave, which was still structurally sound, has been extended by a powerful tower, with buttresses connected by arches on the west wall, its stories, its loopholes. In the following century, the Hundred Years War is over, the population increase that followed forced him to enlarge the building by the construction of collaterals, in walls, which were re-used many stones with marks and masons from the gutter of the nave were demolished for this work. Differences in size and shape of the windows of tracery, but also to Profile arcs show that the construction of collaterals lasted from the 15th to the 16th century. Subsequently, the ship was in turn covered with a vault of warheads before being extended the full length of the ground floor of the tower by the opening of a large arc in the Western Wall .
  • In the 17th century, finally, a small porch was attached to the north of the tower. It houses a conventional door, and a Latin inscription reserved very decorative relief on the wall of the aisle, it invokes the prayer "Holy Mary, St. Martin, St. John the Baptist, St. Michael, St. Roch.
  • The whole interior was covered in 1875 of paintings and decorative figured in 2003 that made the subject of very careful restoration. On the north wall of the choir, three arcades surround the center Christ seated on a golden throne, blessing with his right hand, right the Evangelist Luke, left St. John. On the south wall, on both sides of a window, it is recognized, also in the arcades, St. Matthew and St. Luke.
  • Furniture: In the interest of the building itself, there is also a high quality furniture. The carving of the lintel and pilasters of the entrance door, the door itself, that the steeple and all paneling are reminiscent of the characteristic decoration of castles and mansions in this area Chalosse. The woodwork, consisting of curved or straight panels with a simple decor applique, cover both walls of the nave, choir and they also incorporate the confessionals. The walls of the sacristy are covered with wood paneling and woodwork. The cabinet doors with moldings inspired Louis the 15th are decorated with floral and vegetal. It seems that, like the church, these woods are from the early 19th century when the Abbot Farthouat, also called the Father of Caupenne, led the parish in his missionary work which has continued throughout the first half of the 19th century.
  • This is the last century, around 1770, has been completed on the high altar of marble, the work of brothers Mazzetti, Swiss-born sculptor who worked about the same time in the nearby parish of Laurède. The high altar and that of Caupenne Laurède are decorated entirely comparable, even if their tabernacle is different. One wonders if Mazzetti Caupenne came to the priest at the request of the time, or at the instigation of the families of those who Caupenne-occupied castle nearby.
  • The altarpiece, which overcomes the main altar is made of wood and consists of three compartments separated by fluted columns, in part, partly decorated with plant motifs. The statues of St. Peter and St. Paul framing the central canvas representing the Crucifixion with the Virgin on the right hand of Christ and the church's patron saint, St. Martin, on his left. The foundations of wood are painted faux marble.
  • The altar of the Virgin in the south aisle, is surmounted by a reredos consists of a canvas that represents the central institution of the Rosary (Virgin and Child with St. Dominic), surrounded on each side by a column torso on most of its length. The altarpiece ends laterally by a long scroll.
  • More naive, more recent (nineteenth century), but not without interest are the altar and the altarpiece from north aisle, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, St. Michael and St. Roch, whose name is engraved on the east wall of the porch entry. The altar and the tabernacle with curved wings still decorated accompanied by three paintings representing the three patron saints and separated by pilasters antiquity. In the nave we can admire also the immense and beautiful wooden chandelier from the 18th century, which was produced for the theater in Bayonne. In the arms of this chandelier are suspended all the country's fruit - cherries, pears, apples, peaches, grapes - and some grain that could grow crops - corn in particular.
  • Saint-Laurent:

  • Visit during the heritage days (early September).
  • The Church of St. Lawrence in the 12th century mentioned in the Red Book of the Cathedral of Dax as the Sanctus Laurentius of Guarriges, stands on the edge of a hill just 2.5 km south-west Church of St. Martin. She originally had a small nave extended by a semicircular apse of the same width, but in the 18th century it was a narrow aisle flanked on its northern side, and crowned at its western extremity of steeple stud which is just above the roof.
  • The main apse is constructed using a large device, made from a dark-colored sandstone of good quality, which extends south part of the nave, between two buttresses. Beyond the second buttress, the wall is made of small stones embedded in a mortar bed. In the north, head right to the collateral has a device identical to that of the apse and willing to part with foundation match: these similarities probably explained by the reuse of materials from the demolished wall during the expansion.
  • Review of bedside shows that never existed window axis. In contrast, there is in the south wall a complex set of piercings: the oldest, which are located below, are very close and have piers in medium device and a scalloped arched lintel, above, of other windows also narrow and framed with a regular camera has not notched a header and finally, they built in the 17th century, probably, two tall twin windows in a white limestone unit does not appear elsewhere in the building. Traces of one liter funeral remain on the entire perimeter of the building.
  • Inside, the two naves are separated by two square piers rather bulky and a third, smaller, supporting a western gallery high across the width of the building. The main vessel is covered with a wooden ceiling basket-handle, the byproduct of a flat ceiling set obliquely.

  • The Eucharist cabinet is framed by two wings and topped by a canopy, his door is adorned with a crucifix, the corners are highlighted by two twisted columns, its flared sides are statues of St. Peter, whose keys have disappeared and St. Paul holding a book.
  • The wings, also framed by columns, the center offers the statues of two deacons at the ends, two spirals coil around beautiful roses. All columns are crowned by beautiful Corinthian capitals.
  • The canopy, surrounded by a balustrade and flanked by scrolls, houses a Virgin holding the Child Jesus. It is surmounted by a ball bearing a ribbed risen Christ wearing only a piece of the shroud which falls behind him.
  • The reredos consists of three parts framed by fluted pilasters and acanthus scrolls, and separated by twisted columns decorated with vines.
  • The center, a large painting representing the Crucifixion of Christ to the right, seen to the right the Virgin supported by St. John, left St. Lawrence. On both wings, niches contain the statues of two deacons, Lawrence, holding the grill of his martyrdom, and probably the first martyr Stephen and Vincent of Saragossa.
  • The two wings are topped with flower arrangements and trophies, the central panel of a medallion bearing the dove of the Holy Spirit in glory, flanked by large acanthus leaves and surmounted by a basket of flowers.
  • The chorus is bounded by a barrier of wooden communion of the bars turned. Next to the sacristy, a place of celebration at high back seats is framed by acolytes lowest, all invoice rather rustic. On the ceiling is painted the triangle of the Trinity surrounded by a great glory to the periphery, semi-circles have various designs, two representing the church and the houses of a village.
  • In the aisle, the altar dedicated to St. Lawrence has a trapezoidal tank decorated faux marble, gilded wood tabernacle simple framed by two narrow wings and four large chandeliers, and a painting of the patron saint in Dalmatian on a landscape background, eyes turned skyward, which opens on God the Father, Christ holding the cross and the Virgin Mary, came to greet him in glory.
