• Etymology: The Latin forms (Castrum Sarracenum) or Occitan (Castrosarraceno) of Castelsarrasin have prompted etymological many assumptions. Of fancier (castle built by the Saracens) to the most credible (Saracen castle towers) retain the explanation provided by Dauzat-Rostaing: Castelsarraceno comes from "Castel Cerratius of" man's name.
• History:

• Located at the tip of Languedoc, Castelsarrasin with its castle and fortifications become the Middle Ages, one of the main strongholds of the County of Toulouse. The successive wars and epidemics do not undermine its reputation as the Cathedral Chapter of the Diocese Lower Montauban, and in 1568 the Parliament of Toulouse in 1595 Castelsarrasin choose, remained faithful to Catholicism, as a refuge.
• In 1808, Castelsarrasin is chosen as the sub-prefecture of the department recently created: Tarn-et-Garonne.
• The development of communication channels (channel, railroad), the establishment of a metallurgical plant, a barracks, two colleges and the various urban developments contribute to the vitality and dynamism of the city throughout 19th century. In the 20th century despite the terrible bloodletting of the two wars, the city continues to grow until today where it is clearly only the second site's Economic Department.

• Origin:

• Castelsarrasin is mentioned for the first time in 1156.
• Yet the existence of the Church of St. Saviour, named in the will of the Count of Toulouse in 961, marks the presence of an agglomeration, since the 10th century, around the building.

• Church of St. Saviour:

• Listed on the supplementary list of the general inventory of Historical Monuments.
• Mentioned at 961, the Church of the Savior was rebuilt in 1254, "a sumptuous manner."
• Built in brick, typical of early Gothic architecture with vaulted nave and transept aisles of warheads and covered with a barrel vault novel. Bell tower is octagonal in shape, with two floors separated by an outer cordon. 32 mullioned windows and arched.
• The furniture of the 17th and 18th century historical monument, is made of wood from the abbey Belleperche, acquired in January 1799 and altars and marble angels. The stained glass is signed and dated Villiet Joseph, Louis and Henry Gesta Feur. The church houses the relics of the city's patron, St. Alpinien.
• In a window on the back of the altar were placed various pieces of silver, vermeil or copper constituting the portion classified objects of worship in the churches of the city.

• Church of St. John:

• Founded by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, is mentioned for the first time in 1216. Rebuilt in the 16th century. Built of brick, a gothic heavy, consists of a polygonal choir and a nave of three bays with aisles. Each side of the bell tower is pierced with four arched windows. The second floor is topped by a hexagonal spire pierced the sides of small openings in the shape of a Maltese cross.

• Interesting arms of local characters.

• Church of Our Lady of Alem: The first title evidencing the existence of this chapel dated June 7, 1210. At all times the fame of Our Lady of Alem was great. The chapel has long diverted to the Jacobites she via Toulouse and Moissac.
• City Hall: Construction of the architect Rivet in 1824. 1853 installation of statues of Minerva and Ceres (sculpted by the Toulouse Palat), framing illuminating the clock (made by the great Parisian watchmaker Lepaute in 1847).
• Former Carmelite monastery: Belltower of the 16th century, brick, hexagonal and heptagonal at its base in its two upper floors. Portal of the church from the late 13th century arched, framed by an arch along with three warheads socks.

• Lamothe-Cadillac Hotel (up Lamothe-Cadillac): Lamothe-Cadillac, founder of Detroit (USA), lived here from 1723 to 1730. 18th century façade, courtyard of the 17th century.
• House of the Abbe de Prades (rue du Commandant Châtinières): Birthplace of Father Jean Martin de Prades, contributor to the Encyclopedia. Construction of the 18th century.
• Tudor (rue de la Revolution): Construction of the 16th century. Half-timbered facade.
• Street of Discretion: Typical of the Middle Ages. Mullioned windows to the early 16th century.
• Rue de la Solitude: Typical of the Middle Ages.
• Memorial Square Aristide Briand. Sculptor Toulouse Ducoing 1920.
• Metal bridge over the canal (opposite the station). Plans of the architect of the city Besse. Execution of the deck in 1889 by the manufacturer E. Rengade.
