TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Located in the heart of the West Corsica, the village of Cargèse is a pleasant seaside resort with traditions preserved.
  • History:
  • To escape the yoke of Ottoman, Greek 800 decided to emigrate. The ancestors of the Greek Cargèse came from the Vitylo Magne and Oïtylos in Laconia. Cargèse is also twinned with Vitylo. It is the Bishop of Vitylo who led the talks with the government of Genoa. After 12 years of negotiations, Paomia lands were granted to immigrants with two conditions: the payment of a small fee, the recognition of papal supremacy.
  • In 1675, the concession contract was signed on September 25 and the ship began its journey the Savior. In January 1676, they arrived at Genoa, on the 800, 120 died during the crossing. After questioning the reasons for their exile and a Italianization Greek names, their way back. On March 14, 1676, they landed at the bay called the Monks (Porto Monachi).
  • Since 1678, the five hamlets of Paomia were built and a church. The crops flourished. For 50 years, peace reigned over the land.
  • In 1729, the revolt of the Corsicans against the Genoese bring the Greek Paomia to take sides and refuse to fight against their benefactors. Their land is looted and vandalized, the people attacked. In 1731, the entire colony had reached Ajaccio.
  • In 1768, Corsica was ceded by Genoa to France. The Greeks were incorporated when the Regiment of the Earl of Marbeuf and get a result in compensation for the loss of Paomia, the territory of Cargèse. French military engineering built 120 houses in the same type and a castle to the Earl of Marbeuf became Marquis of Cargèse.
  • In 1793, with the Revolution, Vicoli razed the castle, the Greeks set out again to take refuge in Ajaccio. 4 years later, the Executive encourages their return to Cargèse. After many marriages between Corsicans and the Greeks, the two communities did not leave more and kept all their traditions with the construction of a church called Latin (1828) and a church called Greek (1872), the two facing each other.
  • The Easter celebrations are one of Cargèse Corsican religious holidays not to be missed.

  • Piévane Church Saint John Baptist de Paomia built in the Middle Ages and devastated by the repeated incursions of barbarian, it was rebuilt by the Greek colony of Vitylo. Damaged in 1731 during the uprising of the Corsicans against Genoa, it was abandoned. Subsequently, its stones were reused for the construction of the Greek Church of Cargèse.
