TOWN PRESENTATION

Charming village nestling in the meanders of the Canal du Midi, has experienced Capestang heyday in the Middle Ages. Today, heritage attests. The church (historical monument), a magnificent example of Southern Gothic (fourteenth century), surprises with its air of a cathedral and its incompleteness. Castle (historical monument), large house, was the secondary residence of the archbishops of Narbonne.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, two of them there they built a magnificent ceremonial hall for the reception, which it retains today, besides beautiful murals depicting a magnificent ceiling painted with scenes from around couples, caricatures of animals, the talent of artists from the Middle Ages.

  • Collegiate Church of St. Stephen's 14th century historical monument. One of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Languedoc. Climb the bell tower at 11, 17h, 18h in season.
  • Castle of the Archbishop, a listed building. Castle in the 12th century residence of the Archbishop of Narbonne. It houses a magnificent painted ceiling dating from the 15th century, illustrated and explained by the interpretive center.

  • Church of St. Eulalia of Merida, classified as historical monuments. Rebuilt in the 14th century from Romanesque and fortified bases.
  • Archaeological Museum, paleontological and local history. It contains in particular the banners of revolt winemakers from 1907, classified as historical monuments. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 14h to 18h. Enquiries +33 4 67 89 35 85. Free admission.
  • Montouliers: Small village perched on a hill surrounded by scrubland, vines and red soil typical of this region. In the village, wide steps cobbled, cobbled called, can climb the narrow streets to the castle and church. On leaving the village you will discover the fountain called "Roman".
  • Forty:
  • St. Mary's Abbey, a historic monument of the 11th century. Witness the first major southern novel art. Visit Free
  • Archaeological Museum. Collections from the Neolithic to Middle Ages. Opened only in July and August from 11am to 12pm and from 14h to 18h.
  • Wind Turbine Bollée monument. Made by Auguste Bollee, it allowed to feed water to the castle Roueïre.
  • Puisserguier:
  • The circulade - The village is typical of the "castrum" Languedoc, built in a circle around the castle, the inner journey creates a circulade.
  • The 11th century chateau with a permanent exhibition of the necropolis of the Iron Age of Rouquette. Guided tours.
