Cannes is located in the heart of the Riviera to the east, just 27 km from the airport of Nice Cote d'Azur and to the west, 4.5 km from the airport Cannes-Mandelieu which has the trust of the general aviation and tourism business. Bordered on the south by sandy beaches, surrounded Cannes north of the towns and villages such as Le Cannet, La Roquette-sur-Siagne, Mougins and Vallauris.
The Greek historian Polybius, who lived in the 2nd century BC speaks of a city: Aegyptna, destroyed by the Romans. Some "historians" Cannes willing to have illustrious ancestors have located Cannes. Experts are now agreed to reject this location. In fact we do not know where she was. What we know is that here in the early history, the first "tourists" were the Ligurian. They're the ones who probably settled on the promontory (Suquet today). They built a fortified camp: an oppidum. From their viewpoint they watched their fellows who had, too, fortified on the rocky hill which is now Fort Vauban, on Île Sainte-Marguerite.
At the top of the city was a fortified post called Roman Castrum (current name Castre). In the year 1000, the monks of Lerins become owners. The monks, to protect against Saracens begin construction of the Tower and ramparts. 900 and the end of the fifteenth century, the history of Le Suquet is closely linked to the Monastery although in 1447, the city turns into a municipality. The monks let go their hold a little obedience cons, but are still very much present.
Rue Saint Antoine, is one of the oldest streets of Cannes, it had 40 merchants. In 1500, the old city contained no stairs, the streets were all sloping channel with the environment in which they threw sewage and garbage. In the nineteenth, big cleanup, destruction of houses in ruin ... Today, the Rue Saint Antoine is a mecca of local gastronomy.
It is due to unforeseen circumstances that Cannes became a winter resort, in effect to stop a cholera epidemic, drastic measures were imposed by the city of Nice to travelers heading to Italy. In November 1834, the English Lord Chancellor Sedan Brougham, was stopped at the Pont du Var. Unable to travel to Genoa, the Chancellor turned back toward the small town of Cannes, stopped at the hotel Pinchinat to spend the night. The natural beauty and friendliness of the native induced him to stay longer. He was never to leave again, he lived in Cannes 34 years and died there at age 90 in 1868. Thanks to him, the site became a place Cannes highlight of the English colony. From that date, Cannes began to feel the benefits of implementing a British colony wintering and progress of the trade relations with the land easier to the outside. In 1871, it surpassed the 10 000 inhabitants, becoming the second city of the district of Grasse. The impetus was given in 1870 there were in the city, equipped with sewer, gas lighting and drinking water, 215 villas, 34 hotels and several buildings of various religious cults. The elite German, Russian, Swiss, had followed the example of the UK, and Prosper Merimee, who came to Cannes as inspector of historic monuments, was discovered at the gentry of the city's charms.
Le Suquet: The district of Le Suquet is the heart of the old town with its maze of quaint little streets, stairways and old houses typical. Founded in 997, at the foot of a hill serving as lookout at the Lordship of Rodoard, Cannes was a small fishing shelter overrun with reeds, called "Por Canuae. At the top of the stops, the castle was Cannes (the forerunner of today Suquet), where the abbots of Lerins staying during their visit to their lordship. Thus, the "Portu Canuae" had its "Kan", "point up" in the terminology Celtic-Ligurian origin of the name Cannes. The Church of Our Lady of Hope, built in the 16th century on the place of Castre, was part of the castle fortress Cannes. It was used as a prison during the Revolution, then as a hospital for the army of Italy. This Gothic church was opened for worship in the 17th century as a parish church and was equipped with a clock in 1863.
