Capital of the country's nutty plum, Cancon is located in the Lot valley, in Lot-et-Garonne, at the crossroads of major thoroughfares: Paris / Bordeaux and the Pyrenees: Cahors.
Cannot was the first name of the mountain on which the village is spread. Time of the Franks, on the ancient plateau Cannot have built a fortified village where they could dominate and see the enemy from afar. In the 11th century, the tower reflected the strategic importance of the castle Cancon who controlled the Roman road from Agen to Perigueux. Alphonse de Poitiers founded a large number of country houses which all relatives Monclar of Agen and St. Pastour but Monflanquin, Villereal and Castillonnès. Was it to monitor the lord of Cancon? The latter, of Pons Amanieu Madaillan establishes a small town at the foot of his castle in 1255.
SIGHTSEEING
While only remains of this castle with 24 towers, is that its demolition was ordered in 1739 by the Prince of Pons and completed by the Revolution. This site is accessible by the recently repaved streets lined with timbered houses. The walls and curtains are evidence of a fortress, which is no doubt in reaching the summit.
The panorama extends over the plum orchards and nut trees, the roofs of the village. Monflanquin (one of the most beautiful villages of France) seems closer and the castle of Biron in the Dordogne reminds us that he was a partner.
A hall-style Baltard 125 years, is the center of attraction on market day, Monday, by order of King in 1555.
Cancon had several churches. This is where modern officiating. Inaugurated in 1977, is furnished in stone by the monks in Calcat. Its shape is fan friendly. It houses a 16th century pieta classified by the Fine Arts.
Cancon owns a tourist complex with 2-hectare lake, pool, mini golf and accommodation and catering on site this summer.
