The valleys of Lezert and its tributaries have increased short once the vine. Now ribbons of green and unspoilt nature, they offer in terms of stunning views and the walker or rider secret paths to discover the quiet, old hamlets and inherited the remains of a past endearing.
The plateaus, fertile land, stretching into fields and meadows, which reads the task of quality work, while we saw herds show that agriculture remains a family and related to nature which serves as a support.
From the Middle Ages it preserves valuable evidence. Fought between the lords of Castelmary and family Villelongue, Cabanès had a pretty face addendum at the end of the Ancien Regime. Thus, when the investigator taxes and sizes, J. F. Henry Richeprey, passes through the parish, just before the Revolution, there are 10 pairs of oxen, 40 cows, 300 ewes. And it also underlines the leadership of a few villages or families.
In the 19th century life Cabanès seems to have slowly improved, especially with the arrival of the potato, the extent of chestnut, some improvements in livestock and crops. In all cases, the population of the town increases greatly: 690 inhabitants in 1806, 827 1866, 920 in 1886. The common Cabanès lost count since the last census of 1999 only 220 inhabitants.
Today, for residents and visitors Cabanès, the testimony of history and identity are rooted.
SIGHTSEEING
The church, restored remarkably, apart from its architectural merit novel, contains some elements of retail value, such as bedside with his crows and cornice enriched with a rich bestiary, or the capitals of the transept. Cabanès The church is also linked to the tradition of arms of St. Martha, dating to the early days of Christianity. This relic, first known for curing diseases and injuries of the limbs and bones, found himself later recognized the same beneficial properties in relation to liver disease.
The Resistance Museum, visited by many interested in history.
From the early Middle Ages to the 20th century, the picturesque site Villelongue succeeds in its way a surprising return in history. In the abandoned village and the steep promontory of the castle stands in effect in 1944 the bush Antoine. It began with sixty men, to reach 300 in June or July. Other hamlets like Planque of Pradinas Albagnac entertained more or less long or small groups of guerrillas. The two main leaders and the commander Antoine Delaure their two companies engaged in several actions against the Germans in Carmaux in Rodez, the Lévezou the Bois du Four. Villelongue was not directly attacked. For one group against enemy tried to catch the post Albagnac, which in fact was bent at the Hideout (4 and August 5, 1944). You can also report that some members of the maquis Villelongue joined the Army De Lattre, with which they ended the war in Bavaria and Austria. In July 1944 Villelongue was inspected by Colonel Berger, André Malraux, in fact, which is known to Gramat was intercepted by the Germans, his driver was killed.
In 1968 a small group of former scrub and lovers Villelongue conceived the idea of turning the church into a small museum of the Resistance. The restoration work began quickly. An association was created by André Malraux and accepted the Presidency of honor to commemorate his passing. By 1971 the restaurant closing and the first museum elements were combined. The inauguration, August 5, 1972, at the gathering of the Federation Fellowships to Naucelle Aveyron, was a memorable day. A Mass was celebrated in a meadow in the presence of Bishop Marty, Archbishop of Paris, and all the political, civil and religious Aveyron. Since then Villelongue has not known such a ceremony, although in 1981 its tenth anniversary gave rise to a manifestation of the memories of the old scrub Antoine.
