Boofzheim is mentioned for the first time in the 9th century under the name of Botesheim. According to some historians, in 401, an Alemannic tribe moved into the village under the orders of a chief named Boffi or Boffo, hence the name Boofzheim. But the discovery of Roman coins in bronze, in the village, suggests the Roman presence.
Around 1221, the bishopric of Strasbourg and the Abbey of Saint-Etienne captured the essential property of the village. In 1501, the family becomes Mieg Lord Boofzheim and gives her arms to the town. In 1545 the Reformation was introduced by Mieg family and the church Saint-Etienne is transformed into a temple and then between 1687 and 1854, it will serve simultaneously to both faiths. In 1855, the sanctuary is given to Catholics, the Protestant community who had built his own church.
In 1636, in full Thirty Years War, the Swedes destroyed the village. Boofzheim owes its restocking immigration of families from Switzerland and Holland.
Boofzheim suffered most during the Second World War, the village has been devastated over 30% and the inhabitants were evacuated in 1939 to the Dordogne. The common Boofzheim and Saint-Aubin-de-Cadelech (Dordogne) have confirmed their bond of friendship by pairing in August 1986.
