TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Location:
  • West of France, in Brittany, in the heart of Rennes, Betton is the fifth city of Rennes. Located north of Rennes, close to Rennes-Saint Malo and the coastal road from Mont-Saint-Michel, Betton occupies a strategic position: only 10 minutes from Rennes, 45 minutes from Saint-Malo and one hour from Mont Saint-Michel.
  • Canton Betton Betton includes the municipalities of Saint-Grégoire, Montgermont and La Chapelle-des-Fougeretz. Since 2002, Michel Gautier, Mayor of Betton, general counsel of the elected township.
  • History:
  • The name of the town is probably the origin of the Gallo-Roman betudunum, which means "the fort of the birch" or "the hill of the birch". In ancient times, Betton was also the site of fortifications, and the commander of the Queen's Road, Roman road from Rennes to Avranches.
  • In his etymological dictionary of place names in France, Albert Dauzat cites Betton and traces its origin to the name of the Germanic warrior Betto ("Bet" bed). It was a war chief frank, aristocrat, which took root on Gallic soil in the fifth-sixth century.
  • The site was occupied from Betton Iron Age by the Gauls of Riedones tribe, whose capital was at Rennes. The names of Evran and Gravelle are memories of this first Celtic settlement, about 600 BC
  • After the submission of Brittany, about 53 BC, the Romans' first task was the creation of a road network to establish their dominance, which explains the existence of three Roman roads Betton important.
  • At the same time, the Gallo-Roman form around these tracks: Farm-City Red (use of red brick), La Meziere, Rignes.
  • The Romans then built military posts Chatelier. They occupy the time of the current village where the key was found a vase containing coins of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Germanic bands massively infiltrating into Gaul in the 5th century arrived in the region. The Franks colonize part Betton, leaving the country on behalf of one of their chief Betto. They create fortified rural settlements: the Great Court, the Court Newfoundland, the Court of Maine.
  • Betton was Christianized very early, around 470, evangelized by missionaries Gallo-Romans who built a very old monastery: "Monasterium concrete." The big picture that now adorns the perimeter of the chancel of the church, right and behind the altar, of Istres Contencin, also recounts the memories of the original Benedictine. It shows Saint Melaine, coming to visit the monastery of Betton, procession of monks to meet the bishop who blessed them. The monks enjoyed in this parish rather good income, but despite this their church fell into ruins, and the 15th and sixteenth century, the parish church replaced the priory church. In the old church, the lord of Betton was a Mass every Sunday and abandoning a right to do tithe: the "Treaty of Luminair.

SIGHTSEEING
  • Church of Betton:
  • The first church was burned in 1590 during the Wars of the League, and the worship was transferred to the Priory Chapel of the Abbey of St. Melaine, a few meters north of the present church. On the master-pane (fifteenth century) included the legend of Saint Martin. The upper bellows of this window are now on display at the Museum of Brittany in Rennes. All four-color stained glass, sold in 1879 and double the baptismal font, carved coat of arms of Saint-Gilles are visible today in the Cluny Museum in Paris.
  • On February 17, 1870 took place the solemn laying of the cornerstone of the present church building which posed some difficulties, the shale hill threatening to crawl under the building. He then had to predict the current wall, which, by their cost, and swallowed up considerable funds prevented the completion of the tower. The building will be completed in 1874.
  • The chair of the present church dates from 1875.
  • It will take until 1927 for the purchase of three bells and the construction of their room.
  • The church is neo-Romanesque, with some Gothic elements: the bell ended gables with finials, choir. The pulpit is of wood and neoclassical. It consists of three naves and transepts, a choir with canted and two apses.
