A little history ...

Bergouey Bergon is named first, lord of the place in 935. He remained at the castle near the present cemetery where the ruins are still visible today. The village developed in the twelfth-thirteenth century with the important religious activity with the passage of the pilgrims of St Jacques de Compostela for the church of Viellenave.

Bergouey comes in the form of Castelnau, a regular space which is growing on both sides of a north / south axis. Can be seen when crossing the main street and its typical houses.

In the early 13th century, first Guillem Arnaud de Gramont creates Viellenave bastide, a new town "Villanueva" and his church where he was buried. Many country houses have this name: Viellenave Arthez, Viellenave Navarrenx ...

This fortified village has a single street with houses close to the typical architecture of the Country of Mixe.

In 1792, the two villages together. Today Bergouey-Viellenave is a very friendly town with many rest areas along the river, fishing, hunting and hiking.
