TOWN PRESENTATION

At the heart of a renowned vineyard, Bergheim offers the image of a medieval town that still retains much of its speakers. In his past flourishing Bergheim guard houses of the Renaissance, but mostly walls flanked by towers, probably one of the best examples of fortifications that still exist in Alsace.

SIGHTSEEING
  • Church of Bergheim. Church History:
  • 705: declaration of a basilica dedicated to Our Lady Bergheim.
  • 1287: destruction of the church and the city: the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg first burned in retaliation against Anselm Bergheim second of Ribeaupierre.
  • 1320: reconstruction of a new church.
  • 1347: Consecration of the church today (July 27, 1347).
  • There remain present in the original state: the choir apse domed octagonal - the base of the tower (up to the railing) - the porch with the tympanum representing the Adoration of the Magi (Unique in Alsace) - frescoes - statues St. Joachim and St. Anne Convent Unterlinden from Colmar.
  • 1718: restoration: the original columns are replaced by the current Tuscan columns - the altars and pews - add a platform on the tower and installation of the clock - some changes in walls (doors smaller) .
  • 1819: construction of the chapel.
  • 1959: painting - discovery of the frescoes (probably covered in 1718) representing St George and a scene of the Passion, and in the narthex, the Garden of Olives and the symbols of the four Evangelists.
  • 1996: consolidation of existing paintings, polls in the sides show the existence of other frescoes.
  • Museum of Witches: In memory of its turbulent history, the Museum of Witches will teach you the journeys of these women accused. A beautiful model Bergheim is also exposed.
