At the heart of the Argonne Forest, the village stands on a promontory rising to 276 meters. It is built on the site of an ancient abbey founded in the first half of the 7th century by an Irish monk named "Saint Rouin. After the death of a monk in 680, his body was preserved in the abbey became known as Beaulieu from the 11th century. The power of the abbots of Beaulieu left a mark on local history. The monks cultivated a rich vineyards on the hills around. The abbey was destroyed in 1789 and there are only few remnants.
