Bastia was born in 1378 when the Genoese governor Leonello Lomellini Biguglia left the castle and moved into a fortress "has Bastia". This site overlooking a marine fishing was then called Porto Cardo (now Old Port). His successors retained this residence.

Installing Genoese citizens and the construction of walls protecting the habitat was born a new neighborhood: Terra Nova (now Citadel). The former Porto Cardo became opposed, Terra Vechhia. The walls were completed in 1480 and it was not until fifty years (1530) to be completed, overlooking the old dungeon, the Palace of Governors.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the upper town follows the tradition of sponge cities: grid plan and straight streets. Many religious orders are created and an intense cultural life develops.

From the late 18th century the prosperous city and its population is growing significantly. During the 19th century, the city extends north and on higher ground. The urban landscape is changing so: Construction of the courthouse, extending from San Nicolas, built many stately buildings along wide boulevards. The heart of the city then this aspect can be admired today.
