TOWN PRESENTATION

In the high valley of the Garonne, the Pyrenees, this small spa Commingeoise enjoys a mild climate and a sedative, as well as proximity to many tourist attractions and heritage.

SIGHTSEEING
  • City of Barbazan:
  • The City Hall was built in 1892, under the third Republic. County town since the late 19th century, the town of Barbazan had for many years a justice of the peace. Inside are kept of old postcards and an array of Arnault Guilhem de-Barbazan from the Middle Ages.
  • Baron Arnault Guilhem de-Barbazan was dubbed the 15th century "the Knight without reproach" but also "the restoration of the kingdom and the crown of France" by Charles seventh in 1432. Indeed, he always remained loyal to the monarchy, even during the madness of Charles VI, and won many battles against the Duke of Burgundy and the English. He also fought alongside Joan of Arc and participated in the liberation of Orleans. Charles allowed him to seventh addition, post mortem, to bring him and his descendants the name and home Barbazan Faudoas of the three lilies without bar without his weapons. He was also buried in the church of Saint Denis, in his chapel at his side, with the same honors and ceremonies we are accustomed to kings. The historical truth is not made on the birthplace of Arnault Guilhem de-Barbazan in Bigorre or Comminges?
  • A few years ago, a collection of 130 dolls was donated to the municipality and is on permanent display. You will be able to visit during opening hours of the secretariat. Through the costume dolls, you will tour the world and back in time. Indeed, from antiquity to the present day, the clothes are exact reproductions of costumes from every region and every age. Entirely handmade, this collection reflects a lifetime of passion. Possible visit during opening hours of the secretariat of City Hall. Opening of the secretariat: Monday to Friday from 9am to 12am and from 13:30 to 17:30. Closed on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Spa:
  • If the current spa was built in 1901, it was the Romans who first discovered the benefits of the region would even come to Pompey Convenarum Lugdunum (St Bertrand de Comminges at the time of the Romans) in 72 before Christ. Strabo (another Roman of the time of Augustus and Caesar), in his geographical studies, seemed to allude to the virtues of water as Barbazan wrote: "I met in the country agree an admirable water, very beneficial to health "or" to the point where the Garonne river makes a bend, runs a wonderful water which has the property to release the bowels. " That says it all, the Romans defined the virtues of these hot springs!
  • The baths have their reputation to Francois d'Epinay, Marquis de Saint Luc, Lieutenant General of Guyenne from 1644 to 1670, which is a course every year. Under Louis XIV, the facilities were reduced to a cottage and two baths. In 1846, the first settlement was built. Under Napoleon III, the spa is growing significantly in the Pyrenees. The station then knows Barbazan off. It also came for treatment of sequelae of malaria. Barbazan had at that time, around 1852, three sources of calcium sulphate to treat digestive disorders, belonging to three different owners, who contended spa guests. In the years 1920-1930, Alfonso XIII, King of Spain, attended the station and lived in the Grand Hall Barbazan (now House Retreat ONAC).
  • At the end of the 19th century, the mineral water company Barbazan is created and Mr. Louis Daumas who had built in 1901, the building thermal current in terms of the architect Paul Pujol.
  • Drinks:
  • The date of refreshment the same time as the spa (installed in 1904). Located in the Spa Park, it houses a fountain from which flows the thermal water. Over the years, prolonged inactivity, especially the Vandals had completely deteriorated the fountain-bar. We can now enjoy this beautiful set through rehabilitation in 2007 agreed by the City of Barbazan and performed during the first half of 2010. Everything had to restore. A tender was launched for the project management work on the restoration to the same of this unique heritage and another to select companies to rehabilitate the kiosk. This rehabilitation has been programmed in a project of the "Land Comminges Pyrénées", with the participation of the State, the Region Midi-Pyrenees, the General Council of Haute-Garonne, of the Community of Municipalities of Upper -Comminges and the Municipality of Barbazan. Various trades (carpenters, etc ...) have worked among them the master glassmakers. By them, the windows have been treated with a table holding glasses partially detached so that a careful identification can be made to restore. To retrieve colors of glass identical to original research and purchases were made in Paris and Barcelona.
  • Looking at the booth, we find up and down three kinds of windows: The ceiling painted wooden slats placed in staggered rows is illuminated by a skylight (or surtoit) central, raised, filled with stained glass in the form of geometric designs in simple with tinted lenses in the center of chives (or broken bottles), all in pretty pastel colors. Below the windows of four ears adorn one side and have two scenes of naked very original (or rather four naiads bathing in lascivious poses). These stained glass combine textures and colors and pieces of very thin white glass painted on both sides to form the body: one side color gray complexion and a face highlighting the curves and shadows. And finally stained glass spandrels on the eardrums that are identical bill, about the eight spandrels at the sides, they represent floral and aquatic textures and colored glasses.
  • Mineral water source is available to the public since July 2010, in the form of fluid intake.
  • Casino
  • The Casino late 19th early 20th century: The first casino was built on the station Loures Barbazan in the late 19th century. He had traditional games and a magnificent theater. The guests and villagers could, if they wished, an aperitif on the terrace of the Casino. Its wooden structure was the charm of this magnificent building.
  • Former Casino 1925 - 1972: The Casino of Modern Art was built during the years Charleston. Many personalities of the time, cure Barbazan, spend a relaxing time: 13th King Alfonso of Spain (1927), Francois Descamps former manager of Georges Carpentier (1931), the brothers Jacques (1958) .. . Village elders remember the passage of Fernandel, Bill Coleman, Marie Dubas and many other artists. And the most famous of all, who returned each year, before, during and after the war, the Academician Pierre Benoit, a personal friend of the director (Mr. Rouch Antoine). In 1948 he remained throughout his stay in his room to write "The Casino Barbazan".
  • The Casino today: On 1 July 2002, the group Casinos Vikings opened the doors of its new facility in the village of Upper Barbazan Comminges.
  • Lake Barbazan:
  • Barbazan Lake is of glacial origin and is based on a mysterious legend: St. Peter and Jesus, traveling in the area, dressed like poor people, asked the people of hospitality Barbazan. Repelled by them, but welcome in a home located outside the village, by a couple of modest means, they punished the people of their inhospitality. St. Peter and Jesus then parted the land from which flows the water that engulfs the village and gave birth to Barbazan lake, whose bottom is still unknown to date.
  • Apart from this legend and also the fact that its supply system is not known, Lake Barbazan is a rare lake of glacial origin at this altitude (450 m).
