Located on the banks of the Thau lagoon, the largest ponds Languedoc, Balaruc-les-Bains has the distinction of forming a peninsula facing towards Sète distance of 7 km. Montpellier is located 28 km south-west. Between the heathland and the sea, in the heart of the Bassin de Thau, Balaruc-les-Bains is located on a peninsula that enters the waters of this lake of 20 km which is considered here as a "small sea".
This privileged location gives it a micro-climate marine attenuated when the sun is omnipresent (2600 hours of sunshine per year), medium-high heat. The fresh sea air, the proximity of the Mediterranean and the Thau lagoon are exceptional assets for Balaruc-les-Bains.

The Architectural Heritage:
The Pavillon Sevigne: First of Balaruc-les-Bains spa (built in 1753), it is the center of the city. It now houses the Tourist Office. Its beautiful arcades surrounding a pool of thermal water and the park Sevigne were created in 1833.
The archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman basilica Balaruc-les-Bains: Located in the square near the Bordes Pavillon Sevigne (current headquarters of the Tourist Office). The currently visible part is dated the 3rd century AD. The set consists of a large building of approximately 150m ² evoking a basilica (monument widespread in the Roman world), and two adjacent rooms of a long corridor of approximately 3 m wide, which served the various parts of the system.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Waters: In the Middle Ages, the peninsula is known as the Sancta Maria de Aquis. The Romanesque church of the 11th century, is typical Languedoc style. It was built on ruins whose architecture reflects that they date from the seventh or early eighth century. It was built at the foot of the hill Piosche Aix, on the banks of the Thau lagoon. The church is mentioned in a bull of Pope Urban III in 1187, under the name "Ecclesia (Church) Aquis Béatae Mariae", in the bull of Pope Paul in 1536 and third in a charter of the Bishop of Montpellier in 1587. In 1790, it appears in the map of César-François Cassini de Thyry, under the name "Our Lady of Balaruc baths". This is a priory which depended on the Mense chapter since the early 15th century. The vault of the church served as a burial to several people including Joseph Montgolfier. His body remained there from 1810 to 1858. By 1880, this church was abandoned and converted fisherman's store. Balaruc-les-Bains City acquired the building in the 1990s. Listed as a Historical Monument, it is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation program. Significant work has been made to ensure the withdrawal of water and the consolidation of the apse, and the demolition of the wall separating the nave and the apse. Eventually, this building which is part balarucois heritage and collective memory of this city will become a visitor area.
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption: The first stone was laid in 1855, the church building was completed in 1858.
