TOWN PRESENTATION

The door of the Petite Camargue, and Montpellier.

Baillargues is a city that has retained its originality and its traditions. It is the largest municipality in the canton of Castries, it stretches on 770 ha. With more than 6,000 inhabitants in the last census of 2006, Baillargues faces the future she intends to exploit its strengths but also anticipate those to come as the duplication of the motorway A9 and the future TGV (High Speed Line). For its new lines should not disturb the overall balance of the city in terms of housing and living environment.

Baillargues is a bi-millennium city. The Domitian Way forms the border with the town of Castries whose Renaissance castle called "Versailles of Languedoc" dominates the whole district.

  • Origins: Once they had conquered the Mediterranean part of Gaul (120-118 av. JC), the Romans organized the province called "Narbonne" (the Alps to the Pyrenees). They created especially famous Domitian way. At least 2 km of the road - she went to the location of Demeter - a Roman named Ballius built a "villa", a large house with outbuildings, a large agricultural field. Over the years, the villa became a village and its name evolved to become Baillargues few centuries ago. The first mention of the village on a document dated 819 by which the Emperor said Louis "the Pious" yielded to the bishop of Maguelone suzerainty land Baillargues.
  • Timeline:
  • Roman Period: construction of a "villa" by Ballius on the current site of the city.
  • 819: Louis the Pious yield to the bishop of Maguelone its suzerainty over lands Baillargues.
  • 1146: First mention of the church of Saint-Julien Balanegues (Baillargues) in the cartulary of Aniane.
  • 1377: 11 fires up Baillargues.
  • 1645: Castries Marquessate is erected by Louis XIV. This includes common Baillargues.
  • 1709: Baillargues has 426 inhabitants.
  • 1743: Baillargues has 310 inhabitants (population decline due to an epidemic of plague).
  • 1789: The Marquis de Castries lay their titles and privileges. Baillargues no longer lord.
  • 1963: The church Baillargues is listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments, excluding the side chapels.
  • 1982: Baillargues has 2632 inhabitants.
  • 1999: Baillargues has 5842 inhabitants.
  • A coherent whole: The city presents a coherent born sedimentation architecture of all periods, including the walls reinforce unity. Strolling through the streets, you can read on successive facades his attraction, his hesitation and without contrast that harmony is broken. For if the proportions, plans and volumes vary, the stone that now soars high, sometimes with rounded whorls, is the unifying element.
  • A downtown landmark: A simple structure, the form "L" serves as a central architectural spaces between two major Village Center: Place of July 14 and the City. The choice of an effect of alkaline water to runoff, enhances the sound produced by the sensation of freshness created by the presence of water combined with the cool shade of tall trees.

SIGHTSEEING
  • The Romanesque church of Saint-Julien Baillargues:
  • Baillargues has an interesting Romanesque church built in the center of the oldest part of town, probably in the 12th century.
  • It was fortified in the 15th century to protect inhabitants of the small army of soldiers without employment interruptions during the war called "Hundred Years" looting the country. The work involved in defense have left traces visible: front flanked by two towers, the remains of battlements atop the facade and tower, deadly on the pillow, etc. ...
  • 17th and 18th centuries to today: The maintenance of the church caused some concern to residents. The heavy barrel vault, built of stone, was weakened by the separation of the side walls due to its extensive infiltration from the roof deteriorated to the point where in 1760 he had to replace the roof edge current. Less aesthetic but lighter (it was built in brick), it spares the whole building. In the 19th century, population growth necessitated a larger church. It is obtained by building in stages, 4 side chapels. The presence of relieving arches in the walls allowed to build without endangering the stability of the whole. Recently, significant work has consolidated the upper parts of the building and renovated discreetly outside. The windows were recently restored.
  • A village was fortified:
  • Putting in defense of the church was probably considered inadequate because they quickly surrounded the group of houses closest to the church by an enclosure roughly rectangular, may deter a band of armed assailants briefly. It remains thick walls, a corner tower and a gatehouse which was the main entrance of the "city".
  • The Hundred Years' War ended, the population grew and new houses were built outside the walls, forming the suburbs which have continued to expand.
