TOWN PRESENTATION

Awala-Yalimapo is a coastal town in Guyana, populated mainly Kali'na (one of six American Indian tribes in Guiana).

Since the last census, this county has about 1,200 inhabitants.

Covering more than 18 000 hectares, a very large and ecologically diverse (sand dunes, mangroves, marshes, etc.).

Municipality since 1988, is one of the youngest common and most dynamic of Guyana, she regularly hosts major events (Kali'na Games Day, cassava, Festival Kiyapane ...).


SIGHTSEEING

Awala-Yalimapo is known for the presence each year of sea turtles from laying on the miles of beach in the town. During the nesting season (March-August), Awala-Yalimapo sees the visit of thousands of people who come to watch this extraordinary spectacle of nature.

Cultural heritage is the second asset of the town. The Kali'na have preserved their original culture including their language and ceremonies related to mourning.

Beach activities, visit the Nature Reserve of Amana, crossing to Suriname, discover crafts and fishing are some activities you can do Awala-Yalimapo.

The spots (beaches, sea and wind) makes a practice of windsurfing, kite or the canoeing and kayaking.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

Awala-Yalimapo organizes every two years (last edition 2008) one of the biggest cultural events of Guyana, the festival intercultural Kiyapane, based on the music world including South America and the Caribbean.

Kali'na Games (Olympics of traditional activities) for their part are organized each year (early December) and saw the participation of nearly two hundred athletes from across Guyana, Brazil and Suriname.
