The small village of Avioth is located in the department of Meuse, a few kilometers from Belgium. It belongs to the canton of Montmedy.

Avioth is the place of pilgrimage since the 12th century, when the miraculous discovery of a statue of the Virgin. A first Romanesque chapel was then built to house the miraculous statue. Later, the chapel was enlarged and from the mid 13th century, built a large Gothic church that became basilica in 1993 by decision of Pope John Paul II.

The pilgrimage is currently experiencing renewed popularity. It takes place every July 16.

You can find inside the Basilica of beautiful ornaments, but outside that is most surprising: The Recevresse. This is a unique monument in the world whose reproduction is kept at the Museum of French Monuments. We do not know the exact function of this masterpiece of Gothic art. Suppose, however, it would likely serve as magistrates court to the village.

The pilgrimage takes place every July 16.

The village also hosts its Avioth Christmas Village the second weekend of December, and its Art on the last Sunday of July.

In Canton Montmedy, visitors to the Basilica of Our Lady of Avioth will also discover the Citadel Montmedy, built in the 17th century by Vauban. They will also visit the Renaissance town of Marville, or Castle Louppy-sur-Loison.
