Township Aumont-Aubrac is located north-west of the department of Lozere, bordering the scenic granite mountains of Margeride and huge basaltic plateau of Aubrac.
The Aumont-Aubrac origins are obscure. From the first known documents, the village already existed around the year one thousand and would have formed around a priory founded by the lords Peyre. In the Middle Ages, the village extended from the church to the current mayor. The modern city developed along the N9.
In August 2002, was the 12th Aumont-Aubrac village of France for the label "Village Stage" and the second on the A75 after Massiac.
