In the 18th century, the population was estimated Astaffort two thousand inhabitants. At last count, it was estimated to 1958 people.
Astaffort back at least to the Gallo-Roman. The village already enjoyed a remarkable situation it is located between two towns of Aquitaine cities: Agen and Lectoure. Institutions for agricultural use are increasing, including some villages. The etymology of the name Astaffort come from a currency used by the ancient "Statfortiter" which means "strong position". This reasoning has applications in the field. Indeed, between the 11th and 15th century the village was dominated by two castles: one of Craster, near the church Ste-Genevieve, and that of Mons, near St. Felix. The city was surrounded by walls comprising two bastions, was entered by three doors: Gers, the Goat, and Corné. During the Hundred Years War, Astaffort pass successively under the domination of the King of England Duke, the family of Armagnac 1453, and Albret, Henri IV. In the 18th century the city grew and fate of its walls with the construction of the suburb Corné.
SIGHTSEEING
The billboards affixed to the main monuments of the village can make a historical journey in the old Astaffort.
Location and vestige of the horned: Current Plateau Plaza, the building was razed after the revolution. Only a jamb porch was retained and topped with a round stone. On the opposite side, notice the shield of 1397. The Avenue of the platform marked the former defense ditch that ran along the city wall.
Round tower or "bell" of the parish church of St. Genevieve: the tower is completely detached from the body of the church because there were 3 phases of construction: its base, it was a fortified gate, the low arched windows date from 1666, and the peak date of 1839 (lightning in 1837). At the same time in 1836, this bell tower was equipped with a public clock that marked the life of the town until the late 19th century.
Chapel and parish church of St. Genevieve chapel of the fourteenth. The church is the only active since the 18th century. It was built in several stages: the choir and a large part of the nave date from the 16th and 17th centuries, while the annexes North and South as well as frontage on the street Felix Cassagneau date from 1876. The cemetery, which was located in the Place of Craster, became war memorial since 1926.
Former House strong or "room": the building whose walls are thicker than 108 cm, is an interesting indicator of habitat type adopted by the upper classes between the 12th and fourteenth. The walkway leads the current level of the street behind banks of a dozen meters.
City Hall: the construction of perfect symmetry typical of the early century (1904), adopts a national style with stones in central France. The floor is supported on arcades under which stood until 1890, the market for poultry and grains. In 1928, 3 buildings threatened to collapse the Green Street were purchased by the city and razed: the Place de l'Hotel de Ville was born. In 1904 the steeple decorated with the arms of the city is enlivened by the public clock.
Location of the Gate Gers: suggested by the facade of No. 6, rue Arnaud Road advancing the middle of the street leaving a narrow passage. Defended by a tower, the door was opened and closed the morning to the evening timetable.
Chapelle des Penitents Blancs: she became "church building" for the White Penitents company until 1790. The choir flat bottom is illuminated by two small windows high. Tarnac Street, the facade still bears the relief of a choir in which to decorate the lintel of the door.
Former convent of Poor Clares: built in mid 17th century, it was very rich. The convent was composed of an elite boarding school for girls in the country, a free school for poor children from St Joseph Hospital (where the nuns were present thirty patients from the city), gardens and 8 properties scattered. The monastery served as a gendarmerie, was transformed into meeting rooms, and in social housing in 1980.
School Guizot first public school in the village, it is simply a part of the old hospital to the charge of Clare before 1790. In service until 1878, it included the "school house" inhabited by a teacher and a teacher.
Porte de Bouc: third gate of the medieval village, in the form of a round porch with a square base, it has now disappeared. The Boulevard of the Round was completed after several steps in 1879.
St Felix Church: religious building's oldest Astaffort, it has undergone several stages of construction: in medieval times, then the chorus of a smaller church or chapel is Romanesque primitive northern half of the choir the present monument. Completion in July 1615 (engraved in stone, south side). This building contains, under the flagstones of the nave and choir, hundreds of graves from the 17th and 18th centuries. Formerly Adjoining the walls, the church has been threatened many times to be shaved, and then in 1806 it was finally abandoned it and saved from demolition by a petition of the population.
Remains of city wall or rampart: the small path that you borrow is plotted on the city wall. The walls dotted with towers Astaffort protected them against many seats. They connected the walls of castles and Craste Mous. Two castles, three fortified gates and at least three corner towers, all interconnected by a thick wall, Astaffort was not a country house but a fortified town.
House bourgeois or "mansion" great 18th century building has undergone several stages of construction. Today, a public walkway connecting the street to Brook Street Green, through a staircase, across the courtyard, then using, as a covered walkway, the former entrance hall with a heavy door wood has been preserved.
Fortified house: same type of construction as described in No. 4: heavy equipment in blocks cut and thick walls over a meter. This medieval house belonged to a family of notables who made a career in the royal armies.
Joint Public School, a former elementary school girls: the main facade with stone facade facing the road Miradoux was actually housing the teacher. The construction of the house girls school and a kindergarten (for children of both sexes under six years) began in 1880. First back in 1881. The same year, Jules Ferry declared free of the secular school, and in 1882, compulsory primary education for all until age 12. Astaffort available space to implement these new measures in the best conditions.
A former corn exchange: the imposing size of the hexagonal building, built in 1889, illustrates the importance of fairs and markets in the local economy. Until 1893, the grain market was held under the arcades of City Hall. In 1961, the hall will become a village hall, before becoming, in 1992, theater. Note on the spot, the bandstand with its reinforced concrete structures mimicking tree trunks. It was established on the basis of a first wooden booth erected about 1872, probably one of the first department.
Old School Boys: This building was a house belonging to Mr. Coulom, who sold to the municipality. The classrooms were built up against the north wall of the house (which was the home of the teacher), and the garden became the playground. 150 students from 6 to 12 years were divided into 3 classes of different levels. Built in 1878, this school will be rehabilitated in 1994 and converted to house associations, music school and childcare facilities, whose primary function is to house music courses.
