Arthon is an ancient country whose name derives from Arthur, Celtic term designating the bear, divine animal among the Celts.
Worked flint and a few polished axes are evidence of human occupation in the Mesolithic and Neolithic.
In Gallo-Roman villa was located a significant level of the current rectory. There are still some remains of the aqueduct of 3 km which will bring water from the fountain Bonnet.
In the 9th century, after the victory of Erispoe, the Pays de Retz is Breton. Arthon was then the capital of one of the twenty divisions of the county of Nantes. Arthon 1100 appears in the cartulary of Redon Artum under the term, then in the 12th century and finally to 13th Arcon Arton.
In the Middle Ages are still traces of a castle and a chapel of the manor of Sicaud, cited in 1119. One of the lords of the place, Monsieur de Chevigne receives at his table in 1587, the King of Navarre, the future Henri IV.
In the mid-19th century, there were only two small villages and the Janvrais Masure. Victory miss Tressay La Sicaud (owner) gives the plan of the future town, as currently constituted and funded the construction of a church and a rectory (now Town Hall in 1989). In this church lie the 20 victims of the revolution of 1793.
During the Wars of Vendée, the town rallied to whites, nearly a hundred victims.
Arthon becomes common Arthon-en-Retz July 9, 1887.
The recent history of the town saw heavy fighting at the end of World War II, during the reduction of the pocket of Saint-Nazaire (August 1944-May 1945).
At the Sicaud a monument recalls the names of those who fell while trying to free people from the German yoke locked in the closet of Saint-Nazaire.
