A little history ...
Until the early 12th century, the town has only woods, moors and fields "of course" (uncultivated land rented out to the shepherds of the Ossau valley for the winter). The town was first mentioned in 1119 under the name of Arranque, its name means "Valley High".
The village's history is closely linked to the pilgrimage of St Jacques de Compostela and the ancient kingdom of Navarre. Important step towards Tours, Arancou offers a superb Gothic church of the 13th century Romanesque.
The basement of Arancou is very rich in limestone, so easily modeled by the water that forms cavities. The best known is the Bourouilla. It was occupied at the time of the Upper Magdalenian, 13000 BC least. Excavations have always held and the objects that were found are displayed in the hall of evocation.
