"In the fields around Molsheim" originally meant Altorf, and was part of the domain of the Counts of Colmar, one of the most powerful families of the Holy Empire.
The strategic and administrative center of this vast territory was the stately castle Girbaden. At this point, Altorf was not a village, but rather a group of scattered farms. It was later that Alt (old) and Dorf (village) of German origin takes its name Altorf. But the town is best known for its abbey.
SIGHTSEEING
Abbey St. Cyriac:
Founded in 974 by Count Hugh III, the church has the distinction of living in the juxtaposition of the Romanesque to the Baroque nave and the transept and the choir. Among the pieces of antique furniture, the reliquary bust of St. Cyriac contains bones that were those of several saints. In the church, you can also see the baptismal font, the pulpit, the altar and the Silbermann organ. An atmosphere of calm and serenity pervades the gardens where materialized the location of the old cloister.
