TOWN PRESENTATION

Allenwiller is a small village of about 515 inhabitants, situated on the edge of the Vosges forest, 25 km west of Strasbourg. Its area is 578 ha including 285 ha of forest.
The village extends in length while deep in a valley carved by the Sommerau, 240 m altitude.
History:

The names of successive Allenwiller are Alenevilla (the 10th century); Alhinwilre (the 13th century); Alhenwilre (the 14th century); Alenwilre (15th century); Alenweiler; Allenwiller.
The first written record of the existence of Allenwiller back to the 10th century. In 828, the village had belonged to the convent of Marmoutier. From that date, the village passes in turn to the Bishop of Metz, in 1187 the Lords of Ochsenstein, in 1485 the Lords of Zweibrücken - Bitsch, in 1570 the lords of Hanau - Lichtenberg introducing reform and 1736 Lords of the Hessen - Darmstadt.
The village served often pledged in cons-portion of a loan or debt.
In 1641, there is a soul to Allenwiller: the Thirty Years' War, poverty, famine and pestilence had destroyed the village. The repopulation was effected by the village families from Switzerland, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Normandy.

Heritage:

The bench altar:

This bench is located halfway between Allenwiller Romanswiller and bears the date 1855. It is a bench Eugenie (Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III).
At the time, served bench altar, as its name implies, to facilitate walking. Housewives heavily loaded, returning from market, it could catch their breath.

The Catholic Church:

Construction of the Catholic Church Gothic Revival began September 29, 1905. The Vosges sandstone used from a local quarry. The inauguration of the church took place September 29, 1906.
Before that, Catholics and Protestants used the same church (the present Protestant church) and this for 219 years. The decree abolishing the Simultaneum was signed December 29, 1906.
The current rooster surmounting the steeple in 1913. It replaces the original one which was too heavy and refused to turn!
The organ is new: it dates from 2001. Totally rebuilt by Gaston Kern HATTMATT, this organ replaces M. and J. Rinckenbach 1906 who had suffered from water infiltration.

The Protestant Church:

According to a study by the pastor and historian E. Herr, the Romanesque tower with its three floors has been built in several stages. The foundations and the base date from the 10th and 11th century.
The tower itself dates back to early 12th century. Ravens (protruding rocks) 3rd floor once supported a wooden gallery of 1.50m wide which was the bell tower outside. This tower was therefore, at the time, an ideal observatory and was certainly part of a broader defensive.
The current ship date of 1739. Traces show the existence of older ships.
In the chorus, whose roof is original, is a Eucharistic wall cupboard dated 1473. In the nave at the restoration in 1908, icons were painted on the ceiling and wall friezes. The organ is Theodore Stiehr and date from 1876.

Fountains:

Since the early 20th century, 10 springs located in the village run day and night.
The water from these fountains is from an independent source of drinking water system. It is not analyzed and thus it is given as not drinking.

The laundry:

Located at Rue de la Bergerie, the brook "The Sommerau" This covered wash is powered by the overflowing waters of the old pumping station Allenwiller.
It has 10 car washes.
Restored in May 2002, the wash has since 2003 a night illumination.

Sport: At the edge of the forest, street Birkenwald, it is possible to perform various activities including football, handball, basketball, tennis, fitness trail.
