Aizenay, between forest and lake, just minutes from the ocean, offers all the services of a small town in the countryside.
Located at the crossroads of important routes, Aizenay is a large rural community of more than 8000 hectares which has many industrial groups. It is also a dynamic city that enjoys a privileged geographical location: 10 minutes from La Roche-sur-Yon, to just over 15 minutes from Challans, 20 minutes from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Saint-Hilaire-de-Laugh, 25 minutes of Sables d'Olonne and 45 minutes from Nantes Atlantique Airport.
Aizenay offers great breathing spaces and activities for the whole family: Sitelles space in the city center, the park of the kingfisher with its pond, Valley Moiron and streams of the park or Nightjars, area of 18 hectares with a pond and a wildlife park, forgetting in 420 hectares of forest opening your curiosity.
Aizenay is also 80 km of marked hiking trails and 27 km of cycle paths linking the head of the department to the ocean. The safe cycle paths are easily passable for the less experienced and children.
The church: This imposing building with beautiful stained glass is characteristic of the period of the law of separation of church and state (1905). At that time, the church wanted to be seen and recognized. Its neo-gothic is quite remarkable. Opened for worship on Christmas Day 1905, it was consecrated in 1965 and celebrated its centenary in 2006. On the occasion of the restoration work, undertaken in late 2005 under the original floor, several sarcophagi and foundations of buildings were discovered. The excavations, undertaken in 2007, led to the discovery of a Merovingian necropolis. In 2007, the Church of St. Benedict was written "historical monument".
The path of Remembrance: The March 27, 1944, the American B 17 bomber "Big Red" on fire, flying over Aizenay. It crashed at the edge of the forest. Prisoners of flames, in an aircraft in distress, the crew try to leave the bomber. Some skydive, some in a vacuum, with nothing. The Germans rake farms, bushes ... Airmen were captured, others are supported by networks of resistance ... Fifty years later, in December 1994, the book "His name was Big Red" was released in bookstores. 1 July 1995 was inaugurated the "Trail of Remembrance" erected at the scene of the fall of the bomber.
The stele of the Brionnière: Member of the Resistance, Louis Buton organizes the dropping of three tons of weapons 11 August 1943 near the farm of Brionnière. On 25 October 1943, he was arrested with several classmates and deported in January 1944 in the forced labor camps. One of them, Alfred Doucet died in deportation.
The Heritage Trail: From the tourist office, he invites you to discover downtown living places that marked the lives of agésinates (Aizenay inhabitants). Streets and roads will lead you to discover the history of the town and its heritage.
