The town of Aix, in a valley, is surrounded on all sides by forested mountains that rise up to 1113 meters south in wood de Guerin.

In the 10th century the monks of Sauxillanges founded a priory in Aix.

Aix is the birthplace of the great family of La Fayette. Pons Motier, knight, lord of La Fayette, participated in the Seventh Crusade.
