TOWN PRESENTATION

Aiguillon derives its name from its location at the confluence of the Lot and Garonne ( "aculeus" in Latin), hence the name Aiguillon.

The Romans first realized the strategic importance of such a place, and erected a "castrum" surrounded by an imposing wall.

The first Lords of the Aiguillon were Lunac the Monpezat and Fossat. During the 13th century, was erected in Aiguillon fortified by Philip the Fair. Under English rule in Aquitaine Aiguillon was one of the strongholds of the most important province.

In 1346, then qu'Aiguillon was held by the English and Gascon, the city was besieged by the Duke of Normandy. It was during this episode that the gun was used for the first time in France. Finally, Duguesclin Aiguillon took the English in 1370. Religious wars were marked by the arrival of Charles 9th and his mother Catherine de Medici. In 1600 Henry 4th erected the barony of Aiguillon in peerage. The first Duke of Aiguillon was Henri de Lorraine, killed at the siege of Montauban and buried in the Carmelite church.

In 1637, the Duchy of Aiguillon, acquired by Richelieu, was owned by Madame de Combalet, his niece. The Duchess of Aiguillon protected Cornelius founded the Convent Girls Cross. In 1775, the most famous Dukes of Aiguillon Emmanuel Armand de Vignerod, British Lieutenant General and Minister of Louis XV, was forced to retire to his estates of Biscay. Leroy The architect built for himself the Ducal Castle, the location of the Old Castle Fossat.

The stings are fine gourmets specialties of duck fat, fresh and dried fruits such as strawberries, prunes d'Ente but also "Broutta" sort of mild winter spinach served with the finest meats.


SIGHTSEEING

The Tourrasse St. Como, and stack old Roman monument.

Castle Lucaci (private, 12th century). In the present castle, it remains today the remains of the mediaeval fortress. The base of the walls may reach 2 meters thick. Built on the wall of the Gallo-Roman Castrum, it was a place almost impregnable, especially during the Hundred Years War.

Around the Castle lies the medieval quarter, with its many timbered houses.

The ducal castle, now the Lycee Stendhal, built on the site of the old castle Fossat. A great lover of art and music, he kept a troupe of musicians and the palace was decorated with refinement. Most furnishings and artwork burned during the Revolution, only a few tables remain in the Museum of Fine Arts, Agen, and musical works are kept in the departmental archives.

The Church of St. Felix, neo-Gothic, built in 1850 at the site of a Romanesque church. Marc Ranse famous composer was spurred to build the organ realized that the Magen factor.

The former watchtower of the city, the streets Latournerie, which formerly ran a branch of the Lot. The first Dukes of Aiguillon turned the upper part, extending the Parliament, ie the court. This set is now the Media City.

The museum Raoul Dastrac, former Notre Dame Lot. This area was once the fishermen and sailors, who did build this church, characterized by its Doric columns and triangular pediment. The museum now houses regular exhibitions and a Gallo-Roman mosaic, found at the site of an old timbered house, place Lucien Caujolle. Upstairs, you can admire a collection of paintings and prints pottery from the family of the painter Raoul Dastrac.

The hall is the former Carmelite church, dating from the 15th century. The Duke of Aiguillon the sake of harmonizing the city architecturally, the ornament was made by a triangular pediment, and four columns. In 1922 the church was gutted by fire, leaving only the walls and the facade.

Former hospital near the nursing home, you notice the little chapel and the St. Jacques shells carved on the facade of the neighboring building (old hospital). It reflects the passage of pilgrims to St. Jacques de Compostela.

The church of Saint-Côme, Romance, whose original façade has been rebuilt in the fashionable neo-Gothic in the 19th century and whose apse is shaped clover. During the digging of its foundations, remains of columns have been discovered, probably the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Aesculapius.

Napoleon Bridge, which runs the national road 113, completed in 1825.

Pélagat church, probably built on the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman. The church dedicated to St. Pelagie has kept all its charm and authenticity. It contains remarkable frescoes due to the painter Quérillac (1875).

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

The first weekend of August Aiguillon hosts the annual "Beach" sports tournament in three days, where volleyball, rugby and football are represented.

Each year to August 15, a celebration is held at the beach with a large garage sale on the day and a firework display after the traditional ball.
