Connecting Bar-le-Duc with Verdun, in the First World War this historic road was a supply route for French troops. The main artery in the Battle of Verdun, the 56-kilometre-long National Sacred Way (Voie Sacrée Nationale) today has helmeted milestones at intervals along its length.
Close to the Sacred Way, on the Moulin-Brûlé plateau, at Nixéville-Blercourt, stands a monument which commemorates all those involved in working this strategically-important axis.
The Sacred Way Museum, at Souilly, tells the story of the major role played by the Sacred Way in the 1916 battle, with the help of documents and photographs.
