Bordering the Rhône, opposite the Tain-l'Hermitage vineyards, stands the welcoming little town of Tournon-sur-Rhône, overlooked by the outline of the imposing 10th, 15th and 16th century Castle. You can admire this harmonious scene in peace from the Marc Seguin footbridge...

Once you have passed through the fine, nail-studded wooden door of the castle-museum, a former dwelling of the Lords of Tournon and now listed as an Historic Monument, you are able to explore its furnished rooms and important collections, which date from the Middle Ages to modern times. As well as tracing the history of the Counts of Tournon, the museum also concentrates on the arts and traditions of 19th and 20th-century Ardèche.

Those who like to walk will enjoy the opportunity to stroll in the garden of Eden, a verdant setting in a haven of peace, in the old town fortifications.

Tournon-sur-Rhône

Hermitage Tournonais side Tournon-sur-Rhône is a Land of Heritage... The history of the towns located on the banks of the Rhone begin with the Celts then the Gallo-Romans who build counters (or ports) like Muzolium become Saint Jean de Muzols taking advantage of the place Privileged of this region, allowing among other things by the Doux to go up as far as the Massif Central. By creating, the first roads and the first bridges, they favored the implantation of towns and villages. Indeed, the primitive town of Tournon was built along a track linking Lyon to the Mediterranean and the village of Boucieu-le-Roi was created near a Roman bridge on the Doux.

It is in 817 that we find the first written trace of Tournon. Under the name of "Turnone", marking the beginning of its official history.

It was at this time that a rich family of lords, later called "the Counts of Tournon" came to settle. They chose to install their fort on this granite rock overlooking the Rhone valley. In 1308 the north Vivarais is annexed by the Kingdom of France after being land of empire since the XIth century. The Seigniory of Tournon had a very extensive domain and enjoyed a high reputation throughout the region, among other things by the numerous charges which some counts or counts could have at the Court of France.

Hermitage Tournonais side Tournon-sur-Rhône is also a Land of Traditions! This majestic vineyard extends along the Rhone valley on more than 1 000 ha between Chavanay (42) and Guilherand-Granges (07). With an ancestral tradition, this white or red wine formerly called "Mauves wine" was tasted at the court of Charlemagne. More than 20 winegrowers are located on the Tournonais and share their passions during tastings with those who wish. Every Friday in July-August at 5 pm, the Tourist Office Hermitage Tournonais proposes days "A la rencontre des vignerons" to individuals who wish it. The Hermitage Tournonais territory is a privileged territory, with its many producers of cheeses, honey, traditional charcuterie, organic products that you can discover during gourmet walks between the two shores in July and August and many other guided tours offered by The Tourist Office... This is an opportunity for unforgettable meetings with the locals.
