Nicknamed the "Romanesque Sistine Chapel", the abbey church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is unusual in that it is home to the biggest and most beautiful set of Romanesque frescoes in France. These magnificent murals of the 11th and 12th centuries, which notably decorate the vault of the nave, are a delight for the eyes.

An exhibition housed in the former monk cells tells visitors all about the abbey and its famous frescoes.

Fans of murals can extend the visit by taking the Valley of the Frescoes (Vallée des Fresques) discovery itinerary, which passes through Montmorillon, Jouhet and Antigny.
