The town of Ruffec has preserved a remarkable Romanesque church, the Saint-André church, with a carved facade illustrating the Ascension theme. After the visit of the building, walkers can wander up and down the narrow streets of the old town and discover the charming banks of the Lien river, the lavoir (communal laundry washing place), the mill and the remains of the ancient castle.
Common in south-west France, in Charente, Ruffec is known for being a stage town on the road to Paris and Spain. Founded in 963 by King Lothair, the city was once home to a castle fortress which regularly attracted the kings of France and dolphins.

Ancient medieval city, Ruffec no shortage of vestiges of this time when the city was beaming throughout France.
Former perpetual vicarship, St. Andrew church once belonged to the abbey of Nanteuil. Built in the second half of the twelfth century, it also has parts dating back to the fifteenth century, including two wings were added at that time. Its facade, in Romanesque style, was classified as an historic monument, with its door with three reels and rich capitals.

The old Ruffec district is the main witness of the Middle Ages in the city. Located between City Hall and St. Andrew's Church, he can admire different houses with typical architecture of the medieval Poitou. An old castle is also located on a hill in the center of an ancient meander of the Link. It once provided protection and security of the medieval city, which assured him a good reputation among its enemies.
The little wash of Ruffec, overlooking the Charente is a lovely passage when you walk in the streets of the city. In excellent condition, it recalls the medieval past of the city and adorns the edges of the water.

Throughout the year, a market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning, while a fair is organized on 13th and 28th of each month, throughout the year. Garage sales are also available for different periods.
In January, the International Festival of Humour and Dream takes place in the streets of Ruffec. On this occasion, various shows are offered to the public, such as cabaret entertainment, or humorous plays. Everything happens at the auditorium of The Canopy Ruffec.
