Penne-d'Agenais - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Lot-et-Garonne

The medieval town and former stronghold of Penne-d'Agenais, whose castle was fortified by Richard the Lionheart, is today an approved "Station Verte" (nature-orientated holiday destination) combining architectural charm, a gentle way of life and a pretty location on the banks of the Lot.

Dominated by the Byzantine-Romanesque-style Notre-Dame de Peyragude basilica, recognisable from afar by its silver dome, Penne-d'Agenais's old quarter is a charming place for a stroll, with narrow sloping streets lined with pretty houses, Place Paul Froment – a pleasant square to stop in for a drink – and many arts and crafts workshops.

There's a fantastic view over the Lot valley from the viewpoint indicator near the basilica!

Additional information
Penne-d'Agenais

The name of Penne has a Gallic origin: in the Celtic language "Penn" means mountain peak. From the Roman era, there are still traces of many "villas" which testify to three centuries of prosperity. Then came the great invasions, successively: Vandals, Alamans, Goths, Francs, Arabs and Normans. In the twelfth century, the marriage of Aliénor of Aquitaine with Henri Plantagenet will make the agenais pass under the English domination. Their son Richard Heart of Lion, seduced by the strategic situation of Penne, made it a powerful fortress at the foot of whom the city came to snuggle. From then on, Penne will be the key to the "Duchy of Guyenne", during incessant wars, the armies will compete with possession.

Penne-d'Agenais is located on the borders of Guyenne, Quercy and Périgord, on the sunny slope of a hill that crowns the silver dome of Our Lady of Peyragude and the ruins of a medieval fortress from which one discovers a Admirable panorama, on the valleys of the lot and the Boudouyssou.

Things to see and do

Come and discover the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peyragude, the Gate of the City, the Door of Ferracap and the Gate of Ricard, the ruins of the dungeon of the castle of Richard Coeur de Lion, the church of Magnac, the Gallo-Roman Bridge of Payssel, the monument to the dead carved by Antoine Bourlange...

The cultural and tourist peculiarity of Penne-d'Agenais lies in its art workshops. True creators welcome visitors in their shops-shops from July 1st to August 31 every day. Weaving, jewelry, leather goods, blown glass... Two workshops are open year round: the weaving workshop and jewelery.
