Palavas-les-Flots is a charming seaside resort on the Languedoc coast. Discover it by walking along its 7 kilometres of sandy beaches, relaxing at its marina or strolling along its picturesque canal lined with boats and colourful houses. The little cable car over the canal adds to the old-fashioned charm of the place.

To enjoy a stunning view of Palavas, go to the top of the Phare de la Méditerranée, a former water tower converted into a tourist attraction. Take a look at this curious, futuristic building. Clad in glass and steel, it looks like a giant spaceship. At the top of the building, a panoramic bar and restaurant offers a 360° view over the town's rooftops, the lakes nearby, the Mediterranean Sea, the Pic Saint-Loup and the Cévennes massif on the horizon.

The location is also ideal for spotting the main monuments in Palavas-les-Flots, in particular the Church of St. Peter's imposing bell tower in burgundy shades. Erected in the 19th century, the church is located on the canal's left bank in the town centre, and is one of Palavas' oldest structures. So go and take a closer look to admire its Neo-Romanesque style, then enjoy a rest in the charming St. Peter's Garden at the foot of the church. A stroll by the water and across the Japanese bridge is a very pleasant experience.

Continue exploring Palavas-les-Flots with a visit to the Levant Park, full of idyllic scenery. Be soothed by the sound of its waterfall and the peaceful atmosphere of its small lake, where swans and ducks live. Not far away is the Ballestras Redoubt and its Albert Dubout Museum dedicated to the cartoonist. His caricatures are exhibited there, as well as personal effects such as his drawing table, photographs and all-important pipe. Fans of the artist are sure to love the place!

Palavas-les-Flots

Seaside resort of Occitanie, Palavas-les-Flots takes place in the department of Hérault, in the urban area of Montpellier. The town is located in the heart of the Gulf of Lion, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This small fishing port is today the most frequented beach of the inhabitants of the region.

A territory occupied since the Gallo-Roman period, Palavas-les-Flots became a full-fledged municipality only during the Middle Ages. However, it was not until the 19th century that this city in the south of France really developed. It takes its definitive name in the first half of the 20th century, to strengthen its status as a seaside resort and thus becomes a high place of tourism in the department of Hérault.

Dynamic and rich in tradition, the commune of Palavas-les-Flots attracts visitors by its monuments and beaches, but also by its gastronomic heritage. The town produces the Sable de Camargue, a sand wine with a protected geographical indication. It passes easily from 6,000 to more than 40,000 inhabitants in the summer period, testifying to the great interest of tourists for this warm and pleasant city.

Things to see and do

Palavas-les-Flots hosts three museums of great interest. Since 1992, the Albert Dubout Museum has been located in the redoubt of Ballestras, a former military fort of the 18th century. He devoted himself to the artist of the same name, a great lover of the city. There are exhibition rooms showing the works of Dubout, including his caricatures of life in Palavas-les-Flots. Not far away, the city also presents a museum of the Train, including drawings by Albert Dubout, a steam locomotive, wagons or pictures of the little train at the time it was circulating in the town. The heritage museum Jean-Aristide Rudel reveals the history of the heritage and Palavas-les-Flots. Do not miss the gallery Gustave Courbet which recalls the passage of the famous painter in the commune that he painted.

Built at the end of the 19th century, the Saint-Pierre church takes its place in the city center. In neo-Romanesque style, it replaces the first religious edifice of the commune, a church in planches. Inside, you can discover the reclining figure of Saint Florence, a reproduction in polychrome wax, which contains the ashes of martyrdom.

To the east of the city, the Notre-Dame de la Route chapel was built in the 1960s, before recently becoming a show and conference area. The building, however, welcomes offices in the summer.

Labeled City of Water, Palavas-les-Flots has the privilege of hosting a casino on its territory. Built at the end of the 19th century, it faces the beach, offering slot machines and other entertainment shows.

At the end of the jetty, at the end of the port of Palavas-les-Flots, you can admire a group of monumental sculptures in bronze, L'Espoir. The work unveils five figures of more than four meters and faces the statue of the Fisherman of Palavas.

The beach of Palavas-les-Flots extends for nearly seven kilometers and offers a large number of entertainments like a surf spot, bathing sites, as well as beach games during the summer. The place also hosts campsites, hotels and other restaurants. Not far away, the port of the city allows to admire the fishing boats and to learn to several nautical activities like the jet ski or the parascute.
