Moutier-d'Ahun - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Creuse
7.8

Nesling along the waters of the Creuse river, the charming village of Moutier-d'Ahun is dominated by its Romanesque church. The remains of a former Benedictine monastery, this beautiful building boasts a portal of Flamboyant Gothic style and is home to magnificent Baroque wooden panelling dating from the 17th century. Also of great interest are the altarpiece with twisted columns and 26 carved stalls.

After the visit, nothing like a stroll in the streets of the village, and more especially towards the banks of the Creuse river and the picturesque medieval bridge. From the opposite bank, a magnificent view of the bridge, the church bell tower and the houses of the village awaits visitors.

Additional information
Moutier-d'Ahun

Small village of Creuse, Moutier-d'Ahun takes place not far from Guéret and Aubusson, on the banks of the Creuse.

Very appreciated for the beauty of its landscapes, the village of Moutier-d'Ahun also presents a charming architectural heritage testifying of a rich history. It was born with the foundation of a Benedictine monastery at the end of the 10th century by Boson II, count of the Marche. The monks stay here until the French Revolution, when the town begins to collapse.

From this golden age, there are still very beautiful remains to discover the time of a stay in this region unknown but full of charm.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historical Monument, the abbey of Moutier-d'Ahun was built at the end of the 10th century. Dedicated to Mary, she suffered greatly during the Hundred Years War and was largely rebuilt in the fifteenth century. The oldest parts date from the twelfth century today. The last vestiges will be razed under the Directory, and a garden now occupies the old nave. Linden trees were planted at the site of the old pillars. In the church, it is still possible to admire magnificent woodwork classified as Historical Monuments as an object. Built in the second half of the 17th century, they were restored in the early 2000s.

Also classified as an historic monument, the Roman bridge is worth a visit. It is actually a Romanesque building built in the twelfth century to cross the Creuse.
