Additional information
Montpeyroux

Hanging on a rocky mountain, Montpeyroux is a medieval village that is one of the most beautiful villages in France. Dominating 1,000 years of history and dominated by a dungeon, the municipality is home to nearly 370 souls. This is due to a problem of water supply which was regulated by the installation of a water tower concealed in the central building so as not to disfigure this charming village. The first traces of the village, as the etymology of its name indicates it since it was then called mons petrosus, goes back to Antiquity. This means "rocky mountain" in reference to the quarries of arkose pink exploitable around the village. Besides, the houses like the dungeon were built with this slate which also ensured the economic prosperity of the villagers. The other activity that allowed to live in the villages was the exploitation of the vineyards as evidenced by the cellars of the buildings of yesteryear. Nowadays oriented towards crafts, the village is home to potters and other painters. But it is above all its remarkable historical heritage which still attracts visitors.

Things to see and do

The alleys of the village take you on a journey back in time to feudal times. Your footsteps will lead you to the dungeon overlooking the village. Built towards the end of the 12th century, its role of protection is no longer to be demonstrated because of its strategic position allowing the arrival of enemies from afar. This 3-storey tower, with a total height of 30 meters, has square towers at the top. Back in the picturesque alleyways of the village, you can admire many period houses. In the maze you can take a break in front of the various workshops of the artisans present. Your visit continues with the Romanesque church of the 16th century. Built in 1846, the building is surprising by the size of its ambulatory. You can also admire a beautiful fortified door of the 14th century listed in the Historic Monuments.

The physical visit of the village gives way to the virtual thanks to a model of the tactile village. For visually impaired people, a sensory visit of the village is also possible. You can also visit the Moulerette farm.

Montpeyroux is also the ideal place to go hiking in order to discover the surrounding countryside. Several routes are available from the village.

Events and festivities

On Pentecost Sunday, you can participate in the village patron festival. For the occasion, many animations are proposed for young and old in a festive atmosphere and warm.

Every year, the Antiquities Fair attracts many followers. If you also like to hunt old objects, do not miss this essential rendezvous of Montpeyroux. You can walk through the pits and find the object that is still missing from your collection.

The first weekend of April, amateur and confirmed wine connoisseurs will certainly be delighted to participate in the Eco Vino, the organic wine market. Tastings and good bottles will be honored.
