The Marais is definitely the historic heart of Paris. Rue Saint-Antoine is one of the oldest streets in the city. This district is a wonderful place to wander around, especially because the streets are lined with beautiful shops.
Place des Vosges, the first square to be built in Paris, is really magnificent. Dotted with lime trees, it is surrounded by 36 red-brick-and-stone arcaded houses. What a peaceful and romantic place! At no. 6 is the Maison de Victor Hugo, a museum where the famous French writer lived from 1832 to 1848.
The Marais is packed full of private mansions: the Hôtels de Sully, Saint-Aignan, Sens, Guénégaud, Salé and Soubise. The Hôtel de Salé is home to the Musée Picasso with its display of paintings, drawings and sculptures by the artist. The many internal courtyards in the Marais are also really charming!
The old Jewish quarter and picturesque Rue des Rosiers street are full of life. The Village Saint-Paul with its restored period houses is populated by antique dealers.
