Benefiting from a water and greenery setting, the Romanesque cathedral of Maguelone, dating from the 12th century, rises on a peninsula situated between sea and lakes. The ancient Maguelone island was the seat of a bishop's palace from the 6th to the 16th century.
It is a fortified cathedral with very thick walls (2 m), there is a portcullis and loopholes.
