On no account should you miss a visit to Labastide-d'Armagnac! This superb 13th -century fortified village, nestling in the heart of Lower Armagnac, will take you back in time...the Place Royale, in the centre of the village, is simply magnificent, with its typical old arcaded houses and impressive fortified bell tower. A completely charming place, where you will linger willingly...

The 17th -century former Protestant temple, built near the cemetery, is now a museum dedicated to fortified villages, as well as accommodating temporary exhibitions.

2 kilometres south of the village stands the little chapel of Our Lady of the Cyclists, which, with its old bicycles and many champions' vests, is a real sanctuary of cycling. Every Pentecost Monday, a mass is celebrated there in honour of cyclists.

Additional information
Labastide-d'Armagnac

La Bastide-d'Armagnac is located 30 km northeast of Mont-de-Marsan and 12 km from Barbotan-les-Thermes. Nestled in the heart of Bas Armagnac Landes, this small village has kept its authenticity and its medieval charm.

Following the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet, Gascony became English and it is in 1291 that the Earl of Armagnac Bernard VI gets permission to found La Bastide, the English King Edward 1. Over a period of 150 years, straddling the thirteenth and fourteenth century, 400 new cities will be built. In the spirit of these cities in the Middle Ages, Place Royale rectangular, surrounded by covered, is the economic center of the city. The legend goes that the future Henry IV, who often stayed in a house instead, would have inspired La Bastide d'Armagnac to build the Place des Vosges in Paris.

Many of Armagnac producers open their cellars to the casual visitor. We can also enjoy asparagus, duck products... relish with grilled or carcasses snails often offered during the traditional fiestas, the cabbage soup, the meat pie...

In 2011, Labastide-d'Armagnac entrance, 2nd city in France, in the Cittaslow movement or praise of slowness!
