In the department of Oise, equestrianism is a veritable tradition. Chantilly, the horse-riding capital, has Europe's biggest training centre. On the 2,000-hectare site, over 2,500 horses come to walk, trot and gallop every day. The town also hosts prestigious horse races like the Prix de Diane (or French Oaks) and the Prix du Jockey Club (or French Derby), both in June, which attract enthusiasts as well as interested members of the public. The Great Stables at the Château de Chantilly offer many activities: visit the Living Museum of the Horse and its exhibitions about the equestrian world, attend shows and more.
Around Chantilly, amateur and experienced riders will find plenty to enjoy. With horse rides on sandy terrain in the vast forests, and sporty or tourist-oriented sessions at one of the many equestrian centres, there's something for all levels of ability! The forested areas of the Oise-Pays de France Regional Nature Park are also used for hunting on horseback, an activity that the Duke of Aumale particularly enjoyed. Thanks to the horse's omnipresence in the area, artisanal jobs such as that of farrier are alive and well.
